Coordinate all point of care testing performed in inpatient units and hospital affiliated clinics according to manufacturer’s instruction, CLIA requirements, The Joint Commission standards, and CAP accreditation standards. Assures quality testing and accurate test performance through operator training, equipment monitoring, equipment maintenance and troubleshooting, quality control review, and proficiency testing.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS :

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE:

1. Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Technology or related science field.

2. Licensed by the state of West Virginia as a Medical Technologist within 90 days.

EXPERIENCE:

1. Three (3) years’ experience as a Medical Technologist.

PREFERREDQUALIFICATIONS :

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE:

1. Certification as a Medical Technologist by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) or American Medical Technologists (AMT) or equivalent nationally recognized certification body.

EXPERIENCE:

1. One (1) year of experience in the Point of Care area.

CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The statements described here are intended to describe the general nature of work being performed by people assigned to this position. 1. Coordinate the quality assurance plan for POC testing to reflect current TJC, CLIA and hospital standards. Review records for quality assurance and quality control to ascertain the reliability of reagents and laboratory equipment/instrumentation to assure timely accurate reproducible test results ensuring quality patient care through retrospective audits and root cause analysis of unique incidents. The Quality Assurance Plan is reviewed at least annually.

2. Engage in activities in order to ensure the availability of supplies, forms, data sheets, accreditation information, licensure requirements, safety orientation, continuing education requirements, proficiency testing surveys, to meet the service commitment of the POC testing in a timely and cost-effective manner.

3. Review and evaluate, as needed, quality assurance records and test results to determine analytical errors, shifts and trends, and correlate data with common physiological conditions to assure quality patient test results.

4. Assist the POC staff in the planning, development, and evaluation of quality assurance monitors.

5. Evaluate, validate, and implement new point of care testing technology.

6. Initiate effective communication interdepartmentally and interdepartmentally, as necessary to assure dissemination of information and the identification/resolution of problems in support of the hospital's mission of patient care.

7. Participate in the educational endeavors of the institution to meet the current and future needs of the hospital, laboratory and the university in support of the hospital's mission of patient care, teaching, and research.

8. Monitor results via electronic interfaces or written testing logs to ensure completion of records. Monitor and troubleshoot issues related to electronically interfaced testing.

9. Participate, as required, in the training, supervision and evaluation of new employees, as established by laboratory policies (e.g., section training checklist).

10. Ensure the efficient and accurate processing and reporting of all POC test data. Review computer produced POC test information to audit quality. Identify problematic trends, document and follow through with direct department manager.

11. Consistently maintain all records as required by accrediting agencies, and ensure records are easily retrieved and available for analysis.

12. Develop and follow standard operating policies and procedures to ensure quality point of care testing procedures are written according to appropriate guidelines, maintained according to retention standards and readily available for testing personnel reference.

13. Maintain current knowledge of latest developments and techniques in point of care testing.

1. Able to lift 40 pounds from floor to waist.

2. Able to bend, stoop, reach and be capable of normal rotation, standing and walking for an 8-10 hour shift.

3. Must meet Department of Labor’s MEDIUM duty standard (MEDIUM WORK- exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly).

4. Able to wear latex and non-latex gloves with frequent changes and hand washing.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

1. Able to use a computer keyboard, monitor, mouse and calculator, fax machines, printers and other office equipment.

2. Computer software skills (proficiency with Microsoft office).

3. Considerable knowledge of regulatory standards, safety and infection control practices.

4. Strong communication, interpersonal and organizational skills.

Additional Job Description:

This position will work cooperatively with the Point of Care Coordinator team. Training will occur both in Morgantown and Fairmont.

Once trained, the majority of time will be spent at the Fairmont Medical Center.

Successful candidate should be an effective communicator, able to troubleshoot problems in a timely manner, and work within a group as well as autonomously. Good writing skills are necessary for communicating information as well policy and procedure creation and updating. Needs to be proficient in Excel.
