Job summary

Legacy Care is seeking a Part-Time Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner in Virginia Beach, VA to deliver person-centered psychiatric care in post-acute and long-term care settings.

The PMHNP will assess, diagnose and manage mental health conditions, collaborate with interdisciplinary teams, and provide education to patients and families while maintaining accurate EMR documentation.

Qualifications

  • MSN, DNP or equivalent NP qualification from an accredited program.
  • Current, unrestricted Virginia PMHNP license and eligibility to practice in Virginia.
  • Board certification as PMHNP by an approved certifying body.
  • DEA registration and prescribing authority as required.
  • Experience in post-acute/long-term care, geriatric or related settings preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Perform comprehensive psychiatric evaluations and treatments for patients in post-acute, long-term care and assisted living settings.
  • Conduct mood, anxiety, psychosis and cognitive assessments; review history and medications.
  • Develop and revise individualized psychiatric treatment plans with patients, families and staff.
  • Prescribe and monitor psychotropic medications; manage treatment responses and risks.
  • Ensure timely documentation in the EMR and participate in care coordination with multidisciplinary teams.
  • Provide education and support to patients, families and facility staff.

Role Overview

Part-Time Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner, Virginia Beach, VA

We are seeking a skilled and compassionate Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) to join our Virginia Beach team on a part-time basis. This role offers the opportunity to provide high-quality, person-centered psychiatric and mental health care within post-acute, long-term care and assisted living settings. The successful clinician will assess and treat patients with mental health and behavioral health needs, work collaboratively with interdisciplinary teams, support patients and families, and promote continuity of care through timely evaluation and treatment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide comprehensive psychiatric and mental health evaluations, diagnoses and treatment for patients in post-acute, long-term care and assisted living settings
  • Conduct initial, routine and follow-up psychiatric assessments, including review of medical history, psychiatric history, medications, symptoms, behaviors and current health concerns
  • Assess patients for mood disorders, anxiety, psychosis, cognitive impairment, behavioral concerns and other mental health conditions
  • Develop, implement and revise individualized psychiatric treatment plans in collaboration with patients, families, facility staff and interdisciplinary teams
  • Manage acute and chronic psychiatric conditions and respond appropriately to changes in patients’ mental, emotional and behavioral status
  • Prescribe and manage psychotropic medications safely and effectively within the scope of practice, including monitoring treatment response, adverse effects, drug interactions and clinical risk
  • Monitor patients for suicidal ideation, self-harm risk, aggression, acute behavioral changes and other psychiatric emergencies, escalating care appropriately when required
  • Order, interpret and follow up on relevant diagnostic tests, laboratory results and other clinical investigations
  • Participate in care planning meetings, interdisciplinary reviews and family consultations as required
  • Coordinate psychiatric care with nursing staff, physicians, specialists, hospitals, therapists, rehabilitation providers and community resources
  • Provide education and support to patients, families and facility staff regarding diagnoses, treatment plans, medications, symptom management and preventive mental health care
  • Maintain accurate, timely and clinically appropriate documentation in the Electronic Medical Record (EMR)
  • Contribute to quality improvement initiatives and promote safe, culturally sensitive and person-centered psychiatric care
Qualifications And Required Skills
  • Master of Science in Nursing (MSN), Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) or equivalent nurse practitioner qualification from an accredited programmed
  • Current, unrestricted Virginia Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner licence and eligibility to practice in Virginia
  • Current national board certification as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner through an appropriate recognized certifying organization
  • Current Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) registration and prescribing authority, as required
  • Experience in post-acute, long-term care, assisted living, geriatric, inpatient psychiatric, outpatient mental health or related clinical settings preferred
  • Strong psychiatric assessment, diagnostic reasoning and treatment planning skills
  • Knowledge of psychopharmacology, behavioral health interventions and evidence-informed psychiatric care
  • Proficiency with Electronic Medical Record systems and timely, accurate documentation practices
  • Excellent communication, collaboration and problem-solving abilities
  • Compassionate, culturally sensitive and person-centered approach to patient care
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with facility staff and multidisciplinary care teams
  • Availability to provide reliable part-time coverage based on patient and facility needs
