Job description

Mission or Goal of Unit: Provide rehabilitation leadership to the Commonwealth of Virginia with the goal of improving the quality of life for individuals with disabilities by maximizing independence in living skills and employment activities through innovative education, evidence-based research, and outcome-focused patient care.

Chief Purpose of this position: The chief purpose of this position is to advance the patient care, research and teaching missions of PM&R through direct patient care in the hospital / clinic, the conducting of clinical research, and training of residents, medical students, and other trainees.

Position Responsibilities:

Clinical:
• Primary clinical responsibilities include TBI inpatient rehabilitation and outpatient clinics, to include spasticity clinic and periodic weekend first call and overnight second call duties
• While the clinical focus is on TBI, this position will also serve patients with concussion, stroke, and a wide range of other neurological conditions
• Work collaboratively with hospital unit and ambulatory clinic staff in serving PM&R patients
• As appropriate, serves as an ex-officio member of committees in the facility, giving guidance and assistance when needed
• Be responsible for the enforcement of the Hospital Medical Staff By-laws and rules, and regulations. Follow faculty medical staff bylaws
• Reports directly to the VCU PM&R Vice Chair for Inpatient Rehabilitation / SAI Chief Medical Officer and meet the needs of the Department as defined by the Department Chairperson and Department leadership
• Ensure that medical records are reviewed to determine appropriate patient care and regulations for all governing agencies
• Be available to contact the responsible attending physician regarding matters of concern related to the care of patients
• Meet with facility physicians, management staff, and Departmental chairpersons to facilitate daily interdepartmental working relationships as requested by the Department Chair
• Assist the billing professionals in the preparation of appropriate charges for the medical services rendered and in the review of non-reimbursed billings. Meet VCUHS documentation and coding guidelines. Attend required training
• Assist in the establishment of referral sources for the Department

Teaching:
• Assist in the supervision of residents, fellows, and other learners in the environment
• Participate in the orientation of each group of house staff and students to the Rehabilitation program.
• Assist in establishing the core curriculum, including a list of reading material for house staff and students
• Assist in the evaluation of the house staff and students assigned to the facilities after each rotation

Research:
• Participate in research activities of interest to the clinician, as well as support ongoing and new projects as appropriate in the context of clinical care

Service:
• Participate in University and Department committees as requested
• Contribute to the field of Physiatry overall through professional organizations

Other (for instance, administrative duties, etc.):
• Represent the Department in official meetings as requested
• Attend scheduled Grand Rounds and staff conferences, as well as lectures upon occasion as requested
• Maintain practice credentials and completion of education as required by the hospital, university, and state practice organization

Required Qualifications:
• MD or DO degree or equivalent and board certification in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation
• Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU
• Effective oral and written communication and leadership skills
• Strong clinical and academic credentials
• Demonstrated ability to establish clinical initiatives

Preferred Qualifications:
• Completion of a Brain Injury Fellowship
• Teaching experience at the resident and medical student level.
• Interest and experience in research
