Job summary

Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) seeks a Plumbing Supervisor – Repair & Maintenance in Cambridge, MA. The role supervises a plumbing team, ensures code compliance, plans preventive maintenance, and coordinates with the Work Planning Group.

Excellent leadership, budgeting, and regulatory acumen are essential. Qualified candidates hold a MA Master Plumber’s License with 5+ years of supervisory experience and are able to manage emergency response, weekend coverage, and project planning

Qualifications

  • Massachusetts Master Plumber’s License with 5 years of supervisory plumbing experience.
  • Knowledge of building cooling/heating systems related to plumbing.
  • Experience with underground water, sewage and steam utility systems.
  • Interfacing with City Inspection Services and regulatory programs (Backflow).
  • Facility management experience in an educational setting preferred.
  • Business management and budgeting experience required.
  • Union environment experience with labor relations desirable.
  • Computer literacy with e-mail, Internet and LAN access.

Responsibilities

Position

Plumbing Supervisor – Repair & Maintenance – Full Time – Cambridge, MA

Pay Range: $88,550 - $120,000

Responsibilities
  • Set standards of performance and service and ensure quality of team work and adherence to plumbing code in conjunction with the Work Planning Group, reviews, prioritizes, assigns, and facilitates team work on a daily basis.
  • Schedule preventive maintenance work orders.
  • Be responsible for the timely completion of team work.
  • Provide leadership and ongoing supervision to the Plumbing team.
  • Provide technical expertise to assist team members in their work.
  • Identify training needs and resources.
  • Communicate pertinent information to fellow supervisors, team members, customers and other service providers.
  • Respond to and be available for emergency situations.
  • Provide weekend supervisory coverage on a rotating basis.
  • Plan for special events.
  • Develop, communicate and implement short and long-range projects.
  • Estimate labor requirements for work orders when appropriate.
  • Maintain the cross connect program and maintain appropriate documentation.
  • Review and approve timecards and work orders to ensure completeness and accuracy.
  • Ensure that materials used on the job are charged out accurately.
  • Provide feedback to the Manager on plumbing equipment and systems needing major repairs or replacement.
  • Respond in a timely manner to complaints from customers concerning plumbing malfunctions or emergency situations.
  • Identify and address equipment, maintenance and materials need.
  • Work with other members of the Facilities and MIT community to address and solve a wide variety of problems.
  • Support and enforce the Department of Facilities’ policies and procedures.
  • Maintain personnel records and other data as necessary (e.g. for performance measurement).
Qualifications/Technical Skills
  • Must have a Massachusetts Master Plumber’s License with 5 years of practical experience in the supervision of plumbers.
  • Must have knowledge of building cooling and heating systems and how they relate to plumbing systems.
  • Must have strong work experience with underground utility systems, such as water, sewage, and steam distribution.
  • Will be required to interface with City Inspection Services and local authorities relative to MIT’s Backflow Prevention Program and other Regulatory Programs as necessary.
  • Must have direct experience in facility management preferably in an educational environment.
  • Business management and budgeting experience required.
  • Experience in a union environment with knowledge of Labor Relations and conflict resolution desirable.
  • Must be computer literate with e-mail, Internet and local area networks.
  • Must be available to work any shift, weekend, and/or holiday if necessary.
  • Supervises the operation and maintenance of all plumbing facilities throughout the Institute.
  • Ensures the proper, safe, timely and efficient completion of work to provide water, waste disposal systems, and natural gas and other plumbing services required by the community.
  • Repair and Maintenance is a 24/7 operation. Must be available to respond to off‑hour emergencies and standby supervisory coverage on a rotating basis on weekends and holidays.
