Job description

Work Type: Full-Time

Nature of Work: This is inspection work in enforcement of city plumbing codes and ordinances. Work includes inspecting plumbing installations to determine whether plans, workmanship, and materials comply with established standards. Employees work alone and are responsible to make independent decisions, subject to periodic review by superiors.

Education and Experience: The knowledge, skills, and abilities may be acquired through, but are not limited to, the following combination of education and/or experience.

High school diploma or its equivalent AND Seven years of experience as a journey level plumber.

Special Qualifications: Must possess a journey level plumbers license issued by the City of Omaha at the time of application. Must be able to transport oneself or coordinate transportation to work sites throughout the City during the course of the work day.

Pay Range: $31.50 with step increases to $38.25 Hourly

Examination Information: The examination will consist of a structured interview which will be scheduled at a later date. The structured interview is designed to assess job-related knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position. The final eligibility list will be assembled from those candidates achieving a passing score of 60% on the structured interview (100% weight).

Veteran Points: To claim five (5) points for veteran's preference, you must submit proof of service (such as a DD-214) that includes the date of induction, date of honorable separation, and Social Security number. (You must have completed more than 180 consecutive days of active duty.) To receive an additional five (5) points credit for disability, you must submit proof of eligibility from the United States Department of Veterans Affairs dated within the last 12 months. This information must be submitted to the Human Resources Department by July 10, 2025.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

* Knowledge of the methods and materials involved in the installation, repair, and maintenance of plumbing equipment and sewer facilities
* Knowledge of city ordinances pertaining to plumbing and the safety precautions necessary when performing plumbing work
* Knowledge of and ability to operate a computer or other technology using standard or customized computer or systems software applications appropriate to the assigned tasks
* Ability to learn and adapt to advances in computer and electronics device technology and software
* Ability to detect defects in plumbing installations and to appraise the quality of construction
* Ability to read and interpret plans, specifications, and blueprints quickly and accurately, and to compare them to work in progress
* Ability to understand written or oral instructions
* Ability to adhere to safety policies, procedures, and guidelines
* Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees and members of the general public
* Ability to stand and walk from 76 to 100% of the time; to climb, bend, stoop, squat, kneel, and sit from 51 to 75% of the time; and to reach, crouch, crawl, push, pull, lift and type from 0 to 25% of the time
* Ability to use up to twenty (20) pounds of force to move objects up to 33% of the time, up to ten (10) pounds of force to move objects from 34 to 66% of the time, and lesser amounts of force to move objects from 67 to 100% of the time

* Inspects new and existing plumbing installations, including water heaters, lawn sprinklers, pipe, and connections to ensure that materials and workmanship comply with plumbing codes
* Inspects new sewer connections, sewer repairs, and sewer disposal devices for proper operation and code compliance
* Verifies records of permits and permit applications
* Writes reports of work completed and maintains records of structures inspected
* Investigates plumbing and sewer complaints and notifies owners of recommended corrections
* Advises plumbers, plumbing contractors, and the public as to proper materials and installation methods
* Maintains regular job attendance in accordance with a schedule established for the position by the supervisor
* Performs other related duties as assigned or as the situation dictates within the scope of this classification
