Position Summary

Stoneway Talent is conducting a confidential search on behalf of a well-established, multi-discipline engineering firm in Mississippi. Our client is seeking an experienced Plumbing Engineer to lead and grow their plumbing design department, taking ownership of plumbing systems across a diverse portfolio of commercial, institutional, government, and healthcare projects throughout Mississippi and the Gulf Coast.

This is both a senior technical role and a leadership role. The successful candidate will serve as the plumbing discipline's technical authority while mentoring designers and helping shape the team as the firm's book of work continues to grow. The firm carries a significant and growing presence in the healthcare sector, so familiarity with medical facilities plumbing requirements is a meaningful advantage.

This is an opportunity for a seasoned professional who takes ownership of their work, elevates the people around them, and wants to help build a department that delivers projects with real, lasting impact on the communities they serve.

What You'll Do
TECHNICAL LEADERS & DESIGN
  • Serve as the plumbing discipline lead, owning the design and documentation of plumbing systems across a variety of building types, including domestic water supply and distribution, sanitary and storm drainage, natural gas, and specialty systems.
  • Act as the technical authority on plumbing design, setting standards, reviewing the work of designers, and ensuring accuracy, code compliance, and constructability across all deliverables.
  • Design and oversee plumbing systems for healthcare and medical facilities in compliance with the FGI Guidelines for Design and Construction of Hospitals and Outpatient Facilities, NFPA 99, and applicable state health department requirements, including medical gas rough-in coordination, infection control considerations, and water temperature management per ASSE 1070.
  • Perform and review advanced plumbing calculations, including pipe sizing, pressure drop analysis, fixture unit load calculations, and equipment schedules.
  • Size and select plumbing equipment and fixtures appropriate to project requirements, including water heaters, pumps, backflow preventers, and specialty systems.
  • Coordinate plumbing designs with architectural, structural, mechanical, and electrical disciplines to resolve conflicts and maintain design intent.
DEPARTMENT & TEAM MANAGEMENT
  • Manage, mentor, and develop plumbing designers, providing technical direction, QA/QC oversight, and professional guidance.
  • Plan and balance workload, resources, and schedules across concurrent projects to deliver high‑quality packages on time.
  • Establish and refine design standards, templates, and best practices to strengthen the consistency and efficiency of the department.
  • Partner with firm leadership on staffing, capacity planning, and the continued growth of the plumbing group.
CONSTRUCTION SUPPORT & ADMINISTRATION
  • Lead construction administration for assigned projects, serving as the senior resource for field questions and design clarifications.
  • Review contractor shop drawings, submittals, and product data for conformance with design intent and project specifications.
  • Represent the plumbing discipline in project coordination and construction meetings, and support the preparation of responses to requests for information (RFIs) and field design clarifications.
STANDARDS & EXCELLENCE
  • Apply current plumbing codes and standards in all design work, including IPC, UPC, ASHRAE, and applicable local amendments. For healthcare projects, apply FGI Guidelines, NFPA 99, ASSE 1070, ASHRAE 188 (Legionellosis Risk Management for Building Water Systems), and CMS Conditions of Participation as required by project scope and facility type.
  • Champion the firm's culture of design excellence, consistently producing and enforcing thorough, well‑coordinated, and professionally presented work.
What We're Looking For
  • 7 or more years of plumbing design experience in a consulting engineering or design‑build environment, including time in a lead, senior, or supervisory capacity.
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field preferred, or equivalent design experience.
  • PE license strongly preferred, or EIT with a clear path to licensure.
  • Proficiency with REVIT and AutoCAD for production‑level plumbing design and drafting.
  • Strong working knowledge of plumbing codes and standards, including IPC, UPC, ASHRAE, and applicable local amendments.
  • Some healthcare project experience, with familiarity with healthcare‑specific standards such as FGI Guidelines, NFPA 99, ASSE 1070, and ASHRAE 188 considered a strong advantage.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead plumbing design efforts, perform and review complex calculations, and produce complete, code‑compliant construction documents.
  • Experience mentoring or managing designers, or clear readiness to step into a department leadership role.
  • Experience supporting construction administration, including shop drawing review and RFI responses.
  • Strong attention to detail, effective communication, and a collaborative approach to working within multi‑discipline project teams.
Why This Opportunity

Our client is a well‑established, multi‑discipline engineering firm with offices across Mississippi. This role is a chance not just to design but to lead: to shape a plumbing department, mentor the next generation of designers, and own the discipline on a portfolio that includes hospitals, outpatient clinics, federal facilities, and educational institutions.

Healthcare is a cornerstone of their work, giving the plumbing group consistent exposure to one of the most technically demanding and rewarding sectors in the built environment. For an experienced plumbing professional ready to step into leadership, this is a rare opportunity to build something lasting alongside a team that values craftsmanship and professional growth.
