Description of Work

This is a position at Piedmont Correctional Institution located in Salisbury, N.C. (Rowan County), which is a Medium male prison facility housing 800 inmates.

Position performs journey duties in the installation, maintenance, and repair of air, gas, water, and waste disposal systems. Routine work assignments are in the nature of location of needed repair, and assignments involving work of special or unusual nature are accompanied by specific instructions. The incumbent exercises considerable independence in performance of routine work, but unprecedented assignments are usually discussed with or supervised by a foreman. Work is reviewed by foreman through inspection of work in progress and on the basis of satisfactory operation of equipment repaired or installed.

High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two years of experience in the repair, replacement or construction of piping systems; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Based on the nature of work performed, may require appropriate licensure by the governing board or commission.

It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving the lives and property of its citizens through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced after conviction for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes State Prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as the division of Community Supervision. The Division of Institutions employs over 19,000 staff, operates 56 institutions and is responsible for the care and custody of approximately 30,000 incarcerated individuals across North Carolina. Our division categorizes the institutions into 3 custody levels, which include minimum, medium, and close.
