A Mechanical Contractor Plumber Helper is skilled in the installation, maintenance, and repair of plumbing systems in large-scale commercial and industrial settings. These professionals work with plumbers and apprentices to ensure that all plumbing systems, including water supply, waste disposal, and gas lines, function efficiently and safely within a building or complex. Their basic knowledge covers a range of sophisticated plumbing systems from basic water supply networks to complex HVAC using copper, PVC, cast iron, screw pipe, and HDP.
FUNCTIONAL DUTIES & REQUIREMENTS:
- Adheres to instructions from plumber on blueprints and drawings to retrieve the parts necessary for a project.
- Measurement & Cutting: Measuring, cutting, joining, threading, and preparation of plumbing systems with supervision.
- Installation: Performs minor assembly and installation of plumbing systems according to provided instructions.
- Maintenance: Cleans job site by sweeping, picking up debris and scrap material.
- Equipment Operation: Follows instructions for operation of process and handling equipment.
- Safety: Adheres to safety regulations and standards, and appropriate use of PPE.
- Collaboration: Works alongside other tradespeople on project site.
JOB SPECIFIC DUTIES:
- Requirements: Understand technical specifications including codes and regulations with supervision.
- Piping & Valve Systems: Install minor plumbing systems with supervision from copper, PVC, cast iron, screw pipe, and HDP.
- Soldering: Join and seal sections of pipes using soldering and swaging techniques with supervision.
- Equipment Calibration: Install, set up, and calibrate specialized equipment like pumps, boilers, and heaters with supervision.
- Water Treatment Systems: Install minor water purification and treatment systems with supervision.
- Gas Systems: Install gas lines and related systems with supervision.
- System Flush: Clean and flush the system after installation to remove any debris or contaminants with supervision.
- Pressure Tests: Conduct head or pressure tests with supervision of plumbing and gas.
- Material Selection: Recognize appropriate materials with supervision.
QUALIFICATION STANDARDS:
- Minimum of high school education or GED equivalent, or trade school.
- Required to read and write English, follow verbal instructions, and use simple math.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Must be detail-oriented and organized.
- Must be able to follow instructions.
- Strong TEAM player.
PHYSICAL INVOLVEMENT:
Employee may be required to do the following: climbing ladders, scaffolds, structures, etc. above and below ground level; maintaining balance on ladders, scaffolds structures, etc.; reaching in all directions, handling and manipulating objects and materials; coordinating the movements of eyes, hands, and fingers to operate tools and equipment; lifting 30 to 50 pounds from ground level, waist level, and/or overhead; carrying objects, tools, equipment, etc.; standing; sitting; walking; pushing; pulling; bending; kneeling; crouching/squatting; crawling; seeing with or without correction; hearing with or without correction.
MENTAL INVOLVEMENT:
Employee may be required to do the following: following set procedures and standards; applying basic mathematical skills; planning work and selecting proper tools; comparing and understanding differences in the size, shape, and form of lines, figures, and objects; picturing and evaluating solid objects from drawing or diagrams using standards that can be measured or checked; following oral and/or written directions, plans, and blueprints; reading; writing; ability to recognize and report safety hazards.
WORK ENVIRONMENT FACTORS:
- Location: industrial construction sites and/or office environment.
- Mobility Barriers to Access Job Site: uneven ground level; obstructed pathways.
- Climatic/Environmental Conditions at Job Site: predominately indoor climate; various noise levels caused by tools, machinery, equipment, etc., potential exposure to chemical substances.
