Job summary

City of Wichita is seeking a skilled tradesworker at the journey level to install, maintain and repair plumbing fixtures, water circulation, irrigation systems and accessories. Work follows standard trade practices and may supervise assistants. Oral and written assignments are given by a supervisor and work is reviewed for code compliance.

Starting salary is $23.81–$27.61 per hour, based on experience. Applicants must have a valid Kansas driver license and be eligible to obtain a City-approved

Qualifications

• Two years of progressively responsible experience in plumbing maintenance.
• Ability to acquire a City of Wichita approved and registered journeyman certificate within 90 days of employment.
• A valid Kansas driver’s license.
• Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship.

Responsibilities

• Cuts opening in walls for pipes; cuts, reams, and threads pipe; digs trenches or holes with necessary equipment.
• Installs, maintains, and repairs water circulation and irrigation systems, valves, faucets, traps, sinks, wash bowls, sewers, vents and other sanitary fixtures.
• Installs and maintains PVC pipe systems; tests for leaks and repairs as needed.
• Installs pipe and hose on spray trucks and other equipment; makes time/material estimates.
• Supervises helpers and assists in various phases of the work.
• Installs new irrigation systems and drain lines; inspects plumbing-related equipment.
• Completion requires operation of a vehicle.

Job description

This is skilled work at the journey level in the installation, maintenance and repair of plumbing fixtures, water circulation, irrigation systems and accessories. Work involves the application of standard trade practices in maintaining and installing a variety of plumbing systems and fixtures. Employees are responsible for determining materials and work methods used and may occasionally supervise unskilled or semiskilled assistants. Assignments come in oral and written form, sometimes accompanied by sketches, from a supervisor. Work is performed independently but is frequently inspected upon completion for adherence to regulatory codes.

Workdays and Hours:

Monday-Friday 8:00am-4:30pm

Anticipated starting salary

$23.81 - $27.61 (Based on experience and qualifications)

• Installs and maintains PVC pipe systems by opening clogged drains with a plunger or other devises; replaces washers on leaky faucets; tests for leaks by filling pipe with water under pressure and checking with a gauge for fall pressure.
• Installs pipe and hose on spray trucks and other specially designed equipment and apparatus.
• Makes estimates of time and materials.
• Supervises the work of helpers assisting in various phases of the work
• Installs new irrigation systems, drain lines, etc.
• Inspects plumbing related equipment for maintenance needs.
• Completion of work assignments will require the operation of a vehicle.

Required Experience and Training
