JOB OVERVIEW:
A Mechanical Contractor Plumber Apprentice is skilled in the installation, maintenance, and repair of plumbing systems in large-scale commercial and industrial settings. These professionals work under plumber supervision to ensure that all plumbing systems, including water supply, waste disposal, and gas lines, function efficiently and safely within a building or complex. Their expertise covers a range of sophisticated plumbing systems from basic water supply networks to complex HVAC using copper, PVC, cast iron, screw pipe, and HDP.
FUNCTIONAL DUTIES & REQUIREMENTS:
• System Analysis: Assist in evaluating blueprints, plans, and specifications to understand the plumbing requirements of a particular project.
• Installation: Assist in the setup of advanced plumbing systems, including those integrated into HVAC and inert (medical) gas using copper, PVC, cast iron, screw pipe, and HDP.
• Maintenance: Assist in testing sophisticated plumbing installations to ensure they function optimally.
• Troubleshooting: Identify, diagnose, and resolve issues within complex plumbing networks with plumber supervision.
• Safety Protocols: Adhere to safety regulations and standards, ensuring the safety of oneself and others on the job site.
• Regulation & Code Compliance: Assist in verifying that all installations and repairs comply with local, state, and national codes and standard requirements.
• Collaboration: Work closely with other tradespeople to maintain project execution.
• Documentation: Assist with keeping records of work performed, materials used, and other relevant data.
JOB SPECIFIC DUTIES:
• Requirements: Interpret drawings, schematics, and technical specifications including codes and regulations with supervision.
• Piping & Valve Systems: Install and maintain specialized piping and valve systems designed for commercial and industrial applications from copper, PVC, cast iron, screw pipe, and HDP with supervision.
• Soldering: Join and seal sections of pipes using soldering and swaging techniques with supervision.
• System Integration: Assist coordination with other trades, such as electrical or HVAC contractors, to ensure plumbing systems integrate seamlessly.
• Equipment Calibration: Assist in the installation, setup, and calibration of specialized equipment like pumps, boilers, and heaters with supervision.
• Water Treatment Systems: Install and repair water purification and treatment systems as required in industrial contexts with supervision.
• Gas Systems: Install and repair gas lines and related systems with supervision.
• System Flush: Assist in cleaning and flushing the system after installation to remove any debris or contaminants.
• Inspection: Assist in performing site inspections of plumbing systems to meet safety and regulatory requirements.
• Pressure Tests: Conduct rigorous head or pressure tests to validate the integrity of plumbing and gas installations with supervision.
• Material Selection: Recognize appropriate materials based on usage and specific project requirements to ensure durability and safety with supervision.
QUALIFICATION STANDARDS:
• Minimum of high school education or GED equivalent, or trade school.
• Enrolled in M&D apprentice program - Preferred.
• Previous plumbing experience – Desired.
• State certified Plumbers Apprentice Card - Desired.
• Required to read and write in English, follow verbal instructions, and use simple math.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Basic understanding of plumbing systems and components.
• Ability to read and comprehend project drawings, components, and materials.
• Must be detail-oriented and organized.
• Must be able to manage and prioritize multiple tasks and schedule requirements.
• Strong TEAM player.
PHYSICAL INVOLVEMENT:
Employee may be required to do the following: reaching in all directions, handling and manipulating objects and machines; lifting from ground level, waist level, and/or overhead; carrying objects; standing; sitting; walking; bending; seeing with or without correction; hearing with or without correction; following set procedures and standards; applying basic mathematical skills; repeating tasks of short duration; following oral and/or written directions; reading; writing; ability to recognize and report safety hazards.
MENTAL INVOLVEMENT:
Employee may be required to do the following: following set procedures and standards; applying basic mathematical skills; planning work and selecting proper tools; comparing and understanding differences in the size, shape, and form of lines, figures, and objects; picturing and evaluating solid objects from drawing or diagrams using standards that can be measured or checked; following oral and/or written directions, plans, and blueprints; reading; writing; ability to recognize and report safety hazards.
WORK ENVIRONMENT FACTORS:
• Location: industrial construction sites and/or office environment.
• Mobility Barriers to Access Job Site: uneven ground level; obstructed pathways.
• Climatic/Environmental Conditions at Job Site: predominately indoor climate; various noise levels caused by tools, machinery, equipment, etc.; potential exposure to chemical substances.
