SDSU Housing Facilities Services is looking for a Skilled Plumber to support our mission of delivering industry-best preventive maintenance and ensuring a safe, clean, and fully functional environment for our university community.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform the full range of skilled plumbing work including installation, maintenance, inspection, and repair of plumbing systems for water, gas, oil, steam, sewage, fire sprinkler systems, and refrigeration.
  • Work on both new construction and remodeling projects, ensuring proper installation of plumbing fixtures and piping.
  • Maintain and repair restroom and laboratory fixtures, fire prevention systems, and appliances such as water heaters, garbage disposals, dishwashers, and forced air furnaces.
  • Accurately track time and materials, and complete assignments with professionalism, timeliness, and increasing efficiency.
  • Ensure customer satisfaction by delivering quality work, actively following up on tasks, and maintaining positive communication with clients and colleagues.

Position Information

  • This is a full-time (1.0 time-base), benefits eligible permanent/probationary position.
  • This position is designated non-exempt under FLSA and is eligible for overtime compensation.
  • Standard SDSU work hours are Monday – Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.
  • The individual hired into this role will work on campus at SDSU in San Diego.

Department Summary

The Division of Business and Financial Affairs is responsible for ensuring a safe, productive campus environment while providing the highest quality service in support of academic excellence through thoughtful stewardship of financial, technological, infrastructure, and human resources at San Diego State University.

The Department of Facilities Services is responsible for the operation, maintenance, repair, renovation, remodel, and alteration activities in support of the academic and research mission of the university. Facilities Services employs over 200 employees (full time and students) and supports approximately 8 million square feet of buildings (including residence halls and parking structures) and 280 acres of improved and unimproved land.

The Office of Housing Administration (OHA) is a self-funded operation responsible for planning, providing, and administering housing operations, services, and facilities with over 100 employees and over 150 student assistants with an annual operating budget exceeding $145,000,000. OHA provides housing for over 8,900 students in 25 communities with over 2 million sq. ft. of residential facilities. The OHA manages the operation of residence halls, apartments, and conference and event spaces. The OHA supports the educational mission of the Residential Education Office (REO) while providing business operations for all housing-related functions in support of a quality environment to enhance the student educational experience

Education And Experience

Knowledge: Work requires thorough knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the plumbing trade; a base knowledge of the operation of building automation systems; and a thorough knowledge of applicable state and federal health and safety orders and regulations pertaining to the plumbing trade, including the California State Safety Orders of the Division of Industrial Safety and the California State Plumbing codes.

Abilities: Must be able to perform skilled plumbing work on all applicable equipment and systems; perform applicable welding work; obtain necessary backflow prevention licenses; make rough sketches of plumbing installations; read and work from blueprints, plans, drawings and specifications; estimate materials and labor cost of standard plumbing maintenance and repair work; maintain records and retrieve data related to work performed using manual and/or computerized record-keeping systems; provide instruction to unskilled and semi-skilled assistants; analyze and respond appropriately to emergency situations; prepare standard reports; read and write at the level appropriate to the position; and perform arithmetic calculations as required by the position. Incumbents may be required to possess a California Driver’s License valid for the operation of any vehicle or equipment they are required to maintain and operate.

Experience: These abilities normally would be acquired through any combination of progressively responsible training and experience which demonstrates achievement journey-level skills equivalent to that acquired through completion of a standard plumber’s apprenticeship program.

Licenses/Certifications Required

  • Valid California Driver’s License or the ability to obtain one within 10 days of hire.

Key Qualifications

  • Backflow Prevention Assembly Tester Certification preferred.
  • LEED Green Associate preferred.
  • APPA EFP Credential preferred.
  • Ability to work unsupervised on a variety of job tasks from simple to complex.
  • Ability to perform strenuous physical work; utilize mechanical aptitude and motor coordination. Must be able to read and write at a level appropriate to the position; must be able to follow simple written and oral instructions.
  • Thorough knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the plumbing trade.
  • A base knowledge of the operation of building automation systems.
  • Thorough knowledge of applicable state and federal health and safety orders and regulations pertaining to the plumbing trade, including the California State Safety Orders of the Division of Industrial Safety and the California State Plumbing codes.

Compensation And Benefits

Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department’s fiscal resources.

CSU Classification Salary Range: $71,976 - $104,844 per year (Step 1 - Step 20); Step placement will be determined based on relevant qualifications and professional experience. Step placement upon appointment is not expected to exceed Step 11 ($87,732) for highly qualified candidates. Future increases, including step advancement, are subject to contract negotiations.
