Job summary

CHANCE ALUMINUM seeks a PLC CONTROLS/TECHNICIAN in Williamsport, PA to maintain and repair plant electrical and control systems. You will troubleshoot, document repairs and help meet production schedules under supervision.

The role requires 5+ years in manufacturing automation, a high school diploma or GED, and experience with Rockwell, Siemens, GE Fanuc, Automation Direct, and Eurotherm. Safety-focused, you will read schematics and P&IDs and work across limited spaces.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in a manufacturing facility maintaining automated systems.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and repair electrical systems up to 480V, 3-phase, and interpret electrical drawings and P&ID’s.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Experience with Rockwell, Siemens, GE Fanuc, Automation Direct, and Eurotherm preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain, troubleshoot, and repair manufacturing and facility equipment across a wide range of assets.
  • Apply knowledge of VFDs, PLCs, PC’s on multiple platforms to troubleshoot and modify equipment functions.
  • Work with electrical/mechanical interactions and read schematics and hands-on viewpoints.
  • Develop and install control and distribution wiring per NFPA 70E.

The PLC/Controls Technician will understand and maintain plant and production electrical and control systems including electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic, applied mechanicals and network sub-systems. They will assist in troubleshooting, correcting and documenting repairs and root cause failures. Work will be directed by Maintenance Supervisor and/or Maintenance Manager to ensure that maintenance and production schedules are met.

Responsibilities
  • Assist in maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing manufacturing and facility equipment across a wide range of automated, manual, old and new assets.
  • Apply knowledge of VFD’s, PLC’s, PC’s and their programming on multiple platforms including Rockwell/A-B, Automation Direct, GE Fanuc, and Modicon in order to troubleshoot, repair and modify existing and/or new equipment functions.
  • Apply knowledge of electrical/mechanical interactions from both schematic and hands-on viewpoints for repairs.
    • Both AC and DC motors and drives throughout the plant
    • This would include motor controls, servos, pneumatics, hydraulics and power distribution.
  • Understand and apply safety standards and aptitude during work alone and with others.
  • Develop and install control and distribution apparatus and wiring following NFPA 70E
    • Such as switches, relays, circuit-breaker panels
    • Power cable connections to equipment motor, valves, etc. along with grounding leads.
  • Perform preventive maintenance, PM’s, and Corrective Maintenance and document through a Computerized Maintenance Management System.
  • Assist with breakdown troubleshooting of both electrical and mechanical systems in order to recommend best course of action for repairs to return the equipment to production service.
  • Complete assigned tasks in accordance with government codes and regulations, GMP, safety, quality control, company programs and procedures.
  • Monitor and maintain plant facility systems for supply of chilled water, compressed air, HVAC, emissions controls as well as electrical power.
  • Attend training for applicable standards and duties as assigned.
  • Work toward improving the quality, productivity, legality and safety of each process involved.
  • Keep work areas tidy and clean and tools returned to proper storage.
Required Skills, Experience & Qualifications
  • Must have high school diploma or GED.
  • Must have a minimum of 5 years of experience in a manufacturing facility maintaining automated systems and equipment.
  • Must be able to troubleshoot and repair electrical systems up to 480V, 3-phase, along with reading and interpreting electrical drawings, and P&ID’s.
  • Must be able to communicate in detail, both verbal and written, in order to work with a team to achieve repairs and installations with clarity.
  • Should be able to use a wide variety of different equipment languages to work on existing equipment and software such as Rockwell, Siemens, GE Fanuc, Automation Direct, Eurotherm and others.
Supplemental Skills, Experience & Qualifications (Desirable but not required)
  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree in a related electrical or mechanical field such as automation engineering
  • Rockwell PLC and Drives Certification
  • Prior experience with older equipment, especially older DC motor generators, SCR’s , etc.
  • Prior background in full machine or electrical control system design and implementation
  • Knowledge of 5S principles and Lean Six Sigma Continuous Improvement Programs.
PLC CONTROLS/TECHNICIAN PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:

Requires ability to work in a manufacturing environment. Physical conditions for positions: Sit, stand, walk, bend, reach, push, pull, kneel, stoop, crouch, climb, grasp, ascend/descend stairs and ladders (to include working from elevated platforms), maneuver within tight spaces, routinely lift up to 50 lbs. Must have visual acuity, excellent mobility, good hearing, manual dexterity, good balance, ability to work a minimum of 8 hours, and wear required personal protective equipment. All tasks performed with or without reasonable accommodations.

PLC CONTROLS/TECHNICIAN WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Working with and near electrical and mechanical machinery and equipment in an industrial manufacturing environment, which may include exposure to varying temperatures and noise levels, dust, dirt, fumes, welding machines, and mobile equipment.

Potential for shift work and overtime coverage will be discussed during interview.
