Job Description

Job Title: Playground Monitor Status: Part time

Exemption Status: Non-Exempt Salary Grade: 20

Department/Location: Immaculate Heart Academy / Oro Valley, AZ

Primary Function: Under the direction of the principal, the playground monitor is responsible for supervising students during recess and outdoor activities to ensure a safe, positive, and orderly environment. This role supports student safety and encourages respectful behavior on the playground. The Employee shall be a minister of the Gospel and Catholic Teaching both academically and behaviorally while at work and in his/her personal life, “…Live in a manner worthy of the call you have received.” (Eph. 4:1)

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

  • Recognize and support the unique Catholic Mission of the Diocese by speaking, acting, and instructing consistent with the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church. The employee may not espouse, in word or deed, any doctrine inconsistent with the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church.
  • Give evidence of living Gospel values by being an active member of a faith community and being open to the importance of a personal faith journey; strive to model the teaching of Jesus by attitude and example.
  • Supervise students during recess hours and during lunch periods to ensure child safety
  • Enforce school rules and promote positive behavior
  • Provide a Christ-centered environment
  • Monitor playground equipment and report any safety hazards
  • Intervene promptly and appropriately in conflicts or unsafe situations
  • Assist students as needed and encourage inclusive play
  • Communicate any incidents or concerns to school staff
  • Maintain a visible presence to deter misbehavior
  • Maintain discipline as required during the assigned times of supervision
  • Encourage children to drink water and regulate rest periods
  • Ensure the health and safety of all children under supervision
  • Adhere to regulatory requirements relative to the care and instruction of school children
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Physical/Mental Requirements: Requires coordination and manual dexterity; normal mental and visual ability; ability to lift as required in a normal office environment; ability to spend extended amounts of time outdoors.

Required Activities: Walking; light jogging; sitting; standing; stooping; reaching; talking; handling; hearing; and carrying.

Basic Qualifications

  • Must have a working knowledge of and a strong commitment to the mission of the Catholic Church; be in full communion with the Church
  • Good communications skills, oral and written; excellent human relations and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to engage with children in a friendly and respectful manner
  • Strong observational and communication skills
  • Dependability and punctuality
  • Ability to respond calmly in stressful situations
  • Exercise courtesy to fellow employees, parents and the general public
  • Must be a self-starter, well organized and able to handle multiple tasks
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment
  • Professional bearing; clean and neat personal appearance
  • Ability to successfully pass a criminal history and background check

Education And Experience

  • High school graduate or equivalent education
  • 1-3 years’ work experience related to the care and instruction of children, or equivalent experience

Other/Preferred Skills

  • CPR/First Aid Certified
  • Previous experience working with children is preferred
