Engineering Manager, Infrastructure

Location: United States — US remote, or our Chicago or Detroit offices

Reports to: Director of Platform Engineering

The opportunity

Every SpotOn engineering team ships code through the delivery platform this team owns, and runs it on the Kubernetes platform it operates. You'll lead the two Infrastructure teams responsible for both: Delivery (CI/CD, GitOps, and the developer platform) and Compute (Kubernetes, EC2).

The platform is mid‑transformation. We’re consolidating onto one standard path GitHub Actions, ArgoCD, and EKS and retiring legacy clusters and pipelines along the way. We are tightening governance and PCIDSS4.0.1 compliance and bringing AI into how engineers use the platform. You’ll take on a strong, experienced team with staff engineers already leading technical work. What it needs from you is people leadership, a customer‑focused mindset, a clear operating model, and someone who keeps the platform moving forward and supporting the business.

What the teams own

CI/CD for all of engineering: GitHub Actions with a self‑hosted Actions Runner Controller (ARC) fleet, and AWS‑managed ArgoCD running a hub per domain and serving about3,700 workloads.

The developer platform: Backstage (catalog, software templates, golden paths), container and artifact registries, secrets delivery, and platform documentation. This includes our platform MCP server and AI skills for engineers.

TheEKS fleet: more than 23 GitOps‑managed clusters plus the ArgoCD hub clusters. That covers capacity and autoscaling with Karpenter, cluster add‑ons, Kyverno policy, and a standard Helm chart that defines the contract for every workload.

Cluster lifecycle: EKS upgrades three times a year across about40 environments in five tiers, coordinated with the teams whose services run on them.

What you’ll do
  • Lead and grow the team. Run 1:1s, set clear expectations, give candid feedback, and own performance and career development.
  • Free your staff engineers to lead technically. Take on the management and coordination work so they can concentrate on architecture, technical collaboration, and the hardest technical problems.
  • Collaborate with our other PlatformEMs. We maybe organized into several teams, butweare one platform domain first. Theteamboundariesaresoft, existing onlyto help organize expertise.
  • Helpdriveoperationalefficiency. Buildingandmaintaining an efficient and effective platformis a force multiplier for both humans andagents.
  • Help finish theplatform consolidation. Drive the remaining legacy retirement work to completion. That means coordinating with service‑owning teams across every R&D domain, keepingrisks visible to leadership, andmakingsure post‑migration cleanup hasclear owners.
  • Runthe fleet predictably. Makecluster upgrades, capacity work, and partner notifications routineand owned bytheteam. Balance interrupt-driven work against roadmap commitments.
  • Treat engineers as customers. Make the golden path the easiest path through good defaults, templates, documentation, and AI‑assisted tooling. Usefeedbackfrom consuming teams to decide what to build next.
  • Own reliability and compliance. Lead incident response and learning for delivery and compute, follow through on systemic fixes, and partnerwith Securityon PCIDSS controls for payments workloads.
What success looks like

First 90 days: You know the team, the platform, and its customers. Every engineer has regular 1:1s and clear expectations. You’vegot a graspon how we work, the problems we face, and how we improve our ability to serve the business. You’ve worked with the other Infrastructure leaders on areas of ownership.

First year: There’s aclear roadmap foryour areas of ownership. We’re placing bets and executing on them successfully. Legacy platformsare fully retired, and every cleanup itemhas an owner andis closed. Maintenance cycles continue to land on schedule without fire drills. Staff engineers spend their time on technical leadership, notcoordination. Every engineer has a growth plan, and the team's interrupt load is measured and trending down.

What we’re looking for
Required
  • 3+ years managing engineers on platform, infrastructure, or developer‑productivity teams.
  • Experienceleading senior and staff‑level engineers.Youcan set direction without beingthe deepest expert in the room.

  • Atrack recordofdelivering cross‑team platform migrations or adoption programs, including managing dependencies across many teams and communicating risk to leadership.
  • Experience owning production reliability: on–call health, incident response, and systemic follow‑through.
  • Clear, direct communication with engineers, peer leaders, and non‑technical stakeholders.
Helpful, not required
  • Hands‑on experience with ArgoCD, GitHub Actions, Karpenter, Kyverno, or Backstage.
  • Experience building internal developer platforms with a product mindset: golden paths, self‑service, and developer experience metrics.
  • Experience in a PCIDSS or similarly regulated environment.
