Job description

Gulf Copper is currently seeking an experienced Plate Fitter to join our team. All applicants must successfully pass all required pre‑employment screening tests.

Project details:

  • Location: Guam
  • Duration: 2 months
  • Full‑time: 70 hours per week
  • Certifications required: driver's license or passport
  • Meal per diem: $72 per day
  • Company will provide housing
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Basic understanding of mathematics (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions)
  • Interpret blueprints and fabricate metal structural parts (plates, bulkheads, frames, braces) and fit them in ship hull for riveting or welding
  • Quality control: verify material compatibility with specifications before use
  • Lays out positions of parts on metal, working from blueprints or templates; uses scribe and hand tools
  • Locates and marks reference lines (center, buttock, frame lines)
  • Positions parts in hull with assistance of rigger
  • Aligns parts using jacks, turnbuckles, clips, wedges, and mauls
  • Marks drilling locations and installs temporary fasteners for welding or riveting
  • Installs packing, gaskets, liners, and structural accessories (doors, hatches, brackets, clips)
  • Prepares molds and templates for fabrication of nonstandard parts
  • Removes high spots and cuts bevels using hand files, portable grinders, and cutting torches
  • Tack welds clips and brackets before permanent welding
  • Rolls, bends, flanges, cuts, and shapes plates, beams, and heavy metal parts using shop machinery (plate rolls, presses, bending brakes, joggle machines)
  • Safely and efficiently uses hand, power, and cutting tools
  • Operates large machinery such as metal shear, metal brake, and band saw
Required Education & Experience
  • High school diploma and/or one‑year certificate from college or technical school preferred
  • Must pass a hands‑on test (when applicable) and/or have marine/industrial plate/structural fitting experience
  • 1st Class: 3‑5 years experience
  • 2nd Class: 1‑3 years experience
Working Conditions
  • Open‑air conditions (noisy, hot, cold)
  • Must wear hearing, eye, head protection and proper PPE
  • Climbing up to 100 ft. and lifting up to 50 lb. may be required
  • Traverse gangways and scaffolding at varying heights with fall‑prevention equipment
  • Work with hot and sometimes hazardous materials
  • Work aboard ships, both onshore/offshore and in confined spaces
  • Must stand and operate equipment for up to four continuous hours
  • Long periods of sitting in awkward positions, standing on varied surfaces, bending over, crouching, and climbing over obstructions (scaffolding, ladders, structural members)
