Job description

Under general supervision, performs responsible technical work in the operation of a water or sewer treatment plant on an assigned shift. Responsible for plant operation and maintenance duties to meet State and Federal standards, protecting public health and the environment. Reports to the Superintendent.

Essential Job Functions
  1. Inspect plant equipment and machinery to ensure proper operation; take water or sewage samples, perform routine laboratory analyses, and record results. Adjust treatment plant equipment based on sample results.
  2. Perform preventative maintenance and minor repairs; record hourly readings.
  3. Conduct physical and chemical tests, including turbidity, pH, alkalinity, and bacteriological counts.
  4. Maintain sufficient chemical supplies such as chlorine, lime, and sodium chloride.
  5. Assist in training new employees; identify operational or maintenance needs and recommend actions.
  6. Check for leaks in chlorine and ammonia tanks.
  7. Perform minor calibrations of complex equipment.
  8. Respond to public calls for emergency repairs or service re-connection; dispatch personnel or perform tests.
  9. Monitor control panel charts and pressure gauges.
  10. Keep detailed records of operations and maintenance; maintain logs.
  11. Immediately report serious plant breakdowns or unsafe conditions.
  12. Submit accurate daily reports on plant operations, sampling, and analyses.
