St. Johns County Board of County Commissioners is seeking a Plant Operator I for our well-established Utility Department headquartered in beautiful St. Augustine, Florida.

St. Johns County residents enjoy a high quality of life, with perks including top-rated public schools, beaches, scenic St. Johns River estuaries, a rich agricultural and equestrian scene, and the historic city of St. Augustine. In 2019, the county was ranked the 10th fastest-growing in the U.S., offering diverse opportunities for residents.

Employees work in a team-oriented environment across various divisions, all aiming to provide excellent services and be North Florida's best public utility.

This position involves participating in the daily operation of a wastewater treatment plant. The county maintains 24-hour staffing, and employees will work shifts as assigned.

The role includes plant operation duties within a regulated environment, contributing to safe drinking water provision. Contacts are mainly with county staff, vendors, regulatory agencies, and the public, to provide services, exchange information, or resolve issues.

The ideal candidate must embody St. Johns County’s core values: Dedication, Openness, Adaptability, Visionary, Fiscal Responsibility, Integrity, and Humility. Key responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Operating a wastewater treatment plant and monitoring chemical feeds and flows.
  • Maintaining, servicing, and repairing well field equipment.
  • Collecting compliance samples.
  • Responding to customer inquiries and complaints.
  • Calibrating meters and performing preventive maintenance on pumps and motors.
  • Monitoring SCADA systems and reporting alarms.
  • Maintaining facilities and flushing hydrants and service lines.
  • Changing treatment filters and maintaining a full-time presence on-site.
  • Performing additional duties as assigned.

Applicants should meet the following minimum qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent recognized certification.
  • At least one year of relevant experience or completion of an apprenticeship/internship.
  • Possession and maintenance of a Florida DEP Water or Wastewater Plant Operator Class “C” License as per Florida Administrative Code Chapter 62-602.
  • Completion of County training or equivalent, with a minimum score of 70% on the KSA assessment.
  • Valid Florida Class E Driver’s License and necessary endorsements.
  • Additional certifications or licenses may qualify for incentive pay.

Candidates for the Plant Operator Trainee position must meet similar but slightly less stringent requirements, including obtaining the Class “C” license within two years of hire.
