Job description

The Plant Operator is responsible for the daily operation, monitoring, and maintenance of water treatment plants to ensure the delivery of safe and clean drinking water. This position ensures compliance with regulatory standards, maintains treatment processes, and contributes to the overall efficiency and reliability of plant operations. Additionally, this position contributes to the regulatory compliance and efficient operations of the District.

Essential Functions:

  • Operate all plant equipment and controls to maintain optimal treatment processes.
  • Monitor and manage the SCADA system to oversee plant operations, pump stations, and storage tanks.
  • Conduct regular testing and monitoring of water quality to ensure compliance with regulatory standards.
  • Adjust chemical dosages as necessary to maintain water quality.
  • Document and maintain detailed operational records and logs.
Maintenance & Facility Management:
  • Communicate with internal departments to report and address maintenance issues.
  • Operate and maintain the residual handling facility.
  • Monitor security cameras and facility security systems.
  • Receive, handle, and store chemicals and supplies safely and in compliance with regulations.
  • Perform general housekeeping and upkeep of plant facilities.
Compliance & Safety:
  • Ensure all plant operations comply with company policies, safety regulations, and state and federal water quality standards.
  • Follow established protocols for chemical handling and plant operations.
  • Assist in training and mentoring new operators to maintain operational consistency and adherence to best practices.
Required Education and Experience:
  • High school diploma or GED required.
Licensing/Certifications:
  • Valid Driver’s License.
  • Class IV-A Treatment Certification preferred.
Additional Skills:
  • Ability to learn intimate details of the water system to understand how various components interact with each other.
  • Ability to troubleshoot unique problems.
  • Willingness to learn new technologies, procedures, and regulatory changes.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize appropriately.
  • Ability to work with computer software.
  • Ability to help customers in a polite and courteous manner.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Ensuring accuracy in data logging, chemical dosing, and regulatory compliance.
  • Ability to use Excel, Word, and email for reporting and documentation.
  • Ability to respond to plant alarms, equipment malfunctions, and water quality emergencies.
  • Knowledge of hazardous material handling, storage, and proper usage of PPE.
Work Environment and Physical Demands:

This job primarily operates in a climate-controlled office or laboratory setting. Some time may be spent outdoors or in a processing treatment facility which would involve exposure to weather conditions, elevated noise levels or conditions commonly not found in a typical office environment. Persons in this role will also be exposed to potentially hazardous chemicals. Works with equipment such as computer, laboratory equipment, SCADA system, copy machine, fax, and phones. Frequently required to sit, climb, lifting in excess of 50 lbs., pull/push, carry, grasp, reach, stoop, and crawl. The position requires auditory and visual skills; and the ability to follow written and oral instructions and/or procedures. There is no regular travel expected for this position. Position may be required to work various shifts, weekends and holidays.
