Plant Operator 2 - Cylinder Prep Tech

Job Description

The Plant Operator 2 (Cylinder Prep) processes used gas cylinders in preparation for new gas production. The Technician operates various equipment within the cylinder preparation area following Airgas standard procedures to safely empty and prepare cylinders. Responsibilities include ensuring safety, product quality, and productivity during shifts. Tasks involve sorting cylinders by size and service, scraping and painting cylinders, maintaining organization in the yard, moving cylinders with forklifts and handcarts, inspecting and preparing cylinders for filling, performing maintenance on cylinders, and loading/unloading trucks.

  1. Sort and evaluate incoming gas cylinders.
  2. Move cylinders to designated processing areas.
  3. Remove labels from cylinders.
  4. Paint and apply temperature coatings.
  5. Perform visual inspections of cylinders.
  6. Install valves in low and high-pressure cylinders.
  7. Operate vacuum pumps, driers, bake-out systems, and high-pressure manifolds.
  8. Maintain inventory of prepped cylinders and allocate to customer orders.
  9. Keep the cylinder yard organized and store cylinders appropriately.
  10. Perform valve and cylinder inventory.
  11. Operate forklift after qualification and inspection.
  12. Load and unload cylinders onto pallets and trucks.
  13. Operate caustic scrubbers for toxic gas disposal.
  14. Support maintenance of cylinder prep equipment.
  15. Maintain a clean and safe work environment.
  16. Support health, safety, and ISO quality programs.
  17. Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications and Competencies
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Basic math skills.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office or similar software.
  • Ability to write reports in English.
  • Ability to read and interpret safety and operation documents.
  • Mathematical skills for measurement and calculations.
  • Ability to read pressure and temperature indicators.
  • Ability to connect/disconnect filling lines and move cylinders.
  • Work well in a team, make decisions, and solve problems.
  • Ability to work all shifts and in various weather conditions.
Physical Abilities

Must be able to stand, use hands and arms, and lift/move up to 50 pounds. Vision abilities include close, distance, color, and focus.
