Job summary

Must possess a current Massachusetts Second Class Fireman’s License, per the union contract.

This position works a rotating 8-hour shift schedule.

Job Summary

Under the direction of the chief engineer or designee, the power plant operator is responsible for safely performing a variety of functions on an assigned shift, including assisting in the preparation of boilers, turbines, and equipment for inspection, cleaning boilers, tanks, and breeching areas, and making necessary repairs or replacements to pipes and boiler insulation.

Essential Functions
  • Assist in the start-up and shutdown of boilers and equipment as directed.
  • Lubricate machinery and equipment as assigned.
  • Inform control room operators and supervisors of operational and safety issues observed during duties.
  • Follow all safety rules and regulations, including Confined Space Entry and Lockout/Tagout, and be familiar with chemical safety and MSDS.
  • Support other trades as needed.
  • Utilize all power plant tools, equipment, and computer systems.
  • Maintain and care for all related equipment.
  • Drive college vehicles as assigned, inspecting for damage and reporting issues immediately.
  • Participate in training and safety programs as required.
  • Fill in for control room operators as per union contract.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent; trades school certification or combination of education and experience.
  • At least six months of experience in a power plant.
  • Current Massachusetts Second Class Fireman’s License; ability to attain a First-Class Fireman’s License.
  • Valid driver’s license and college driving credentialing requirements, including DMV background check.
  • Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions and communicate effectively.
  • Ability to lift up to fifty pounds, and perform physical activities such as bending, walking, standing, and climbing stairs and ladders.
Skills & Preferred Qualifications
  • Ability to climb, operate rigging, and work in confined spaces.
  • Ability to interpret blueprints, diagrams, and specifications.
  • Strong communication skills (oral, written, electronic).
  • Proficiency with internet, email, work order, and trade database systems.
  • Ability to work independently and in teams, using good judgment.
  • Knowledge of OSHA regulations and union contract.
