Job summary

NV Energy in Nevada seeks a skilled power plant operator to perform maintenance and operations in a 2nd stage combined cycle facility. The role directs on-site tasks, coordinates with internal and external teams, and maintains logs and reports.

You will participate in safety programs, start-up/shut-down procedures, and routine surveillance to ensure reliable megawatt generation. Applicants should be a graduate of an apprenticeship program or trade school with knowledge of electrical generating

Qualifications

  • Graduate of apprenticeship program or trade school with knowledge of electrical generating equipment/operations and turbine generators and 3-5 years of related experience.
  • Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of high-pressure boilers and related mechanical equipment; occupational hazards and safety precautions applicable to the work, and automated boiler and electrical & pneumatic controls.
  • Ability to read and understand piping and instrument diagrams (P&IDs), mechanical isometric drawings, electrical one-line and wiring diagrams and OEM instruction manuals.
  • Ability to detect and troubleshoot operating defects or faults.
  • Ability to work with high voltage equipment.
  • Excellent oral, written and computer skills and ability to maintain production records and logs of general operating conditions.

Responsibilities

  • Operate and maintain power plant equipment in a combined cycle facility.
  • Direct, assist and coordinate with internal and external personnel to ensure safe, efficient operations.
  • Perform start-up and shut-down of plant equipment and conduct routine surveillance.
  • Complete training and plant operation qualifications up to Control Room Operations.

Job description

Basic Purpose

Performs any and all assigned power plant operations and maintenance duties. Directs, assists and works with internal and external personnel and resources to ensure the efficient operations and repair of plant equipment. Develops schedules, directs work assignments, prepares job related reports, and completes other administrative duties.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Ensures that routine plant work is performed safely, in compliance environmental regulations and NERC standards, and with a high regard for equipment protection and megawatt generation, to include Control Room Operations, Plant Surveillance Rounds, Water Chemistry, Continuous Emissions Monitoring Systems Audits, Pre-Start Checks, start up and shut down of plant equipment in a combined cycle power plant. Performs all maintenance as assigned per 12-hour shift and tasks of higher complexity according to specialty skills and training.

Examples of multi-skilled on-shift duties include:

  • Applies safe work practices, participating in the station's Lock Out/Tag Out (LO/TO) process.
  • Tasks of varied mechanical complexity; including preventive maintenance, replacement of filters, gaskets, valve packing, and other light mechanical tasks.
  • Tasks of varied electrical complexity; including lighting, limit switches, batteries, wiring and disconnections of electrical equipment and fuses.
  • Tasks of varied instrumentation & controls complexity; including calibrations, thermocouples, probes, and troubleshooting.
  • Makes recommendations for improvement of plant performance and operational safety relevant to assigned area of responsibilities.

Completes all required training requirements and plant operation qualifications up through Control Room Operations.

Performs related duties as assigned.

Essential Education, Skills, and Environment

Education and Work Experience

Graduate of apprenticeship program or trade school with knowledge of electrical generating equipment/operations and turbine generators and 3-5 years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Specialized Knowledge and Skills

Ability to read and understand piping and instrument diagrams (P&IDs), mechanical isometric drawings, electrical one-line and wiring diagrams and original equipment manufacturers (OEM) instruction manuals. Ability to detect and troubleshoot operating defects or faults. Ability to work with high voltage equipment. Excellent oral, written and computer skills and ability to maintain production records and logs of general operating conditions.

Equipment and Applications

Specialized instrument control and electrical skills and knowledge in the inspection, calibration, testing, troubleshooting, and repair of field instruments and transmitters, electrical equipment, valve positioners, analyzers, programmable logic controllers, and distributed controls systems. Instrument controls and electrical knowledge is required for this position.

Work Environment and Physical Demands

Must have a valid driver's license. Work is completed in various environments including heat and cold; close proximity to potential hazards, outdoors, as well as in an office. Some tasks require an employee to work near unpleasant and noxious fumes, as well as odors and loud noises. Job duties require an employee to bend, stoop, reach, stand for extended periods, lift heavy objects, and work overtime hours.
