Manager of Communications and External Affairs
The Upper Peninsula Power Company (UPPCO) is seeking a Plant/Fixed Asset Managerto join their team in Marquette, Michigan.For the right candidate, working fully remote in Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, or Iowa may be considered.The position offers applicants the opportunity of a remote/hybrid remote work schedule after the initial 90-day onboarding and job orientation.
In this role, you will be responsible for executing accounting processes related to fixed asset accounting, reporting, and policy.Maintain accurate fixed asset records and ensure the timely and precise reporting and analysis of the Company's fixed assets.The Plant/Fixed Asset Manager will report to the Director of Finance and Accounting.
Responsibilities
- Prepare entries, corrections, and adjustments to plant and specified asset accounting records.
- Evaluate variances and analyze the effects of transactions on various account relationships related to financial statements.
- Maintain a strong understanding of capitalization rules, regulations, and industry best practices; provide leadership and educational support to the organization to ensure costs are capitalized in accordance with FERC/GAAP and applicable regulatory orders.
- Process additions, retirements & adjustments to Projects & Fixed Asset accounting systems.
- Produce accurate and timely accounting records for all fixed asset additions, transfers/retirements, and depreciation/amortization, including journal entries, documentation, account and subsystem reconciliations, roll forward schedules (where applicable), and reports.
- Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual reports related to Plant Accounting areas of responsibility.
- Maintain Projects, Fixed Asset, and Tax Repairs accounting systems (PowerPlan); query systems for information.
- Understand and support relationship between Projects, Fixed Assets, and General Ledger.
- Reconcile fixed assets accounts to the general ledger monthly.
- Review capital projects, including AFUDC and CPI.
- Coordinate the preparation of annual property tax filings.
- Provide support for regulatory filings (drafting testimony, responding to data requests, providing recommendations on cost recovery, testify when necessary).
- Monitor regulatory orders and developments as they impact accounting issues to ensure appropriate accounting and reporting changes are made. Ensure that the Company’s regulatory accounting records with respect to asset accounting comply with all regulatory orders and decisions.
- Provide support and timely data for tax accruals, audits, and filings.
- Perform year-end close procedures and support the annual audit.
- Stay current with industry trends/developments, particularly as they apply to utility and compliance requirements.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required; MBA a plus.
- 8 years of fixed asset accounting experience.
- Experience with PowerPlan or a similar fixed asset system.
- In-depth knowledge of FASB/GAAP/FERC.
- Understanding of the interrelationship between utility rate making, tax, and general-purpose accounting concepts.
- Knowledge/experience in utility accounting industry and application of FERC uniform system of accounts.
- Ability to multi-task and work under pressure to meet deadlines.
- Advanced Excel skills (pivot tables, vlookups, etc.).
- ERP/Business Information Warehouse/Data Query experience.
