Job summary

The City of Ventura seeks a Plans Examiner to perform plan reviews for residential and commercial projects, ensuring compliance with California Building Codes and related regulations. You will provide technical guidance to engineers, architects, contractors, and the public about permitting and codes.

In this on-site role, you will handle counter duties, process plans and permits, prepare reports, and support policy development within the Community Development Department.

Qualifications

• Requires combination of education, training and experience equivalent to high school, with additional coursework in construction technology, building and permit processes, engineering or related field.
• Three years of responsible building permit processing or two years of plans review experience.

Responsibilities

• Review routine to moderately complex residential and commercial building plans for compliance with California Building Codes, State laws, and City regulations.
• Provide technical guidance and code interpretation to engineers, architects, contractors, applicants, and the public regarding permitting, plan review, fees, and applicable codes.
• Perform public counter duties: accepting plan and permit applications, processing plans, issuing permits, and guiding applicants.
• Research and provide updates on plan review and permit status using computerized record systems.
