Job summary

The City of Richmond is seeking a Planning Specialist to provide specialized and technical support for building and planning permitting activities. Responsibilities include intake, plan reviews, responding to code questions, issuing permits and occupancy certificates, data entry, and fee calculations.

Responsibilities also cover coordinating administrative aspects of the permitting process and assisting applicants with building and trade permits.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of construction terminology and building codes
• Understanding of city permitting processes and plan reviews
• Fundamental numerical and algebraic skills
• Experience with GIS/architectural software and MS Office

Responsibilities

• Receives and reviews documents and verifies information is accurate and conforms to City guidelines.
• Assesses the scope of projects including required permits and decides whether to accept proposals.
• Issues documents such as permits or Certificates of Occupancy for residential projects or new building change-of-use projects.
• Responds to customer requests and inquiries and provides information.
• Maintains and updates records.
• Performs additional duties such as researching, extending and killing permits, verifying permits have the required information, performing initial review of permit applications.
