Job summary

The University of North Carolina at Charlotte’s Office of Emergency Management seeks a qualified professional to lead emergency preparedness planning for the institution. You will assist the Director in drafting, implementing, and revising emergency plans and in facilitating planning meetings.

Bachelor’s degree with 3+ years in emergency management or a related field is required, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree and 3+ years of experience in emergency management, risk management, business continuity, or related fields; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Advanced degree in a related field.
  • Five years of experience in emergency management (or related field) beneficial.
  • Knowledge of federal, state, local, and UNC System planning guidance and standards.
  • Experience with emergency management-related software or systems.
  • Applicable NIMS/ICS training.

Responsibilities

  • Manage planning efforts for the Institution, including the emergency operations plan and related documents
  • Lead THIRA efforts
  • Assist with EOC activations
  • Support OEM initiatives as needed

Primary Purpose of Department

The University of North Carolina at Charlotte ( UNC Charlotte) Office of Emergency Management ( OEM ) is responsible for the planning and coordination of the Institution’s operational emergency preparedness, response, and recovery from a disaster. OEM adheres to a comprehensive all-hazards, whole community approach to incident management based on the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s ( FEMA ) National Incident Management System ( NIMS ).

Primary Purpose of Position

  • Lead emergency preparedness planning efforts for the institution.
  • Assist the Director in setting strategy for drafting, implementing, and revising all emergency plans for the institution.
  • Facilitate planning meetings related to emergency planning initiatives.
  • Assist the department in planning, implementing, and evaluating emergency preparedness training and exercises.

Summary of Position Responsibilities

The position responsibilities are as follows:

  • Manage planning efforts for the Institution, including the emergency operations plan and related documents
  • Lead THIRA efforts
  • Assist with EOC activations
  • Support OEM initiatives as needed
  • Bachelor’s degree and 3+ years of experience in emergency management, risk management, business continuity, or related fields; or
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • Advanced degree in a related field.
  • Five years of experience in emergency management (or related field).
  • Experience in emergency/disaster operations is highly beneficial.
  • Strong time management, organization, and communication skills.
  • Experience in drafting emergency operations plans and related documents.
  • Knowledge of federal, state, local, and UNC System Office planning guidance to include CPG 101, EMAP standards, and System directives.
  • Experience with emergency management-related software or other applicable systems.
  • Experience in emergency management at an educational institution.
  • Applicable NIMS /ICS training.

Necessary Certifications/Licenses

ICS 300 & 400.

Preferred Certifications/Licenses

  • CBCP (Certified Business Continuity Professional);
  • CEM (Certified Emergency Manager);
  • CPM (Certified Project Manager);
  • ARM (Associate in Risk Management);
  • CRM (Certified Risk Manager); or similar state certifications.
