Job description

JOIN OUR TEAM AS A PLANNER II!

The Planner II (Long Range) position supports a wide range of planning activities within the Planning and Development Department, Long Range Planning Division. This mid-level role involves professional duties and judgment, with fewer routine administrative tasks.

The following essential job functions illustrate the responsibilities, duties, and skills associated with this position:

  1. Develop planning studies and reports to support new and updated plans, programs, and regulations.
  2. Review or assist in reviewing development proposals and site plans for compliance with codes, plans, and regulations.
  3. Prepare and present detailed reports on development proposals to government bodies.
  4. Collect statistical data and prepare reports and maps on topics like census information, land use, tax base data, and occupancy rates.
  5. Act as a liaison between community groups, government agencies, developers, and elected officials in developing neighborhood plans.
  6. Coordinate community review of development projects.
  7. Provide information to the public regarding development regulations.
  8. Assist in resolving citizen and customer issues.
  9. Oversee the work of consultants and interns.
  10. Conduct field evaluations and assessments.
  11. Attend evening and weekend meetings.
  12. Perform related duties as required.

Qualifications include:

  • Knowledge of planning law principles at local, regional, and state levels.
  • Knowledge of urban design and land use concepts.
  • Knowledge of research and data collection practices.
  • Skills in visual communication and physical design.
  • Ability to apply statistical, algebraic, or geometric knowledge practically.
  • Ability to communicate ideas clearly in writing, orally, and visually.
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships with various stakeholders.
  • Ability to participate in multiple projects independently or in a team.
  • Ability to balance details with overarching goals and vision.
  • Ability to interpret legislation, rules, and codes.
  • Proficiency with computer software such as MS Office, GIS, Adobe Creative Suite, AutoCAD, Community Viz, SketchUp, or similar tools.

Physical Skills: Effective verbal, written, and visual communication skills.

Education, Training, and Experience: Master's Degree in a related discipline from an accredited college or university, or a Bachelor's Degree with at least two years of professional urban and regional planning experience. A Master's Degree is preferred.

Licenses, Certifications, or Registrations: Valid Florida driver's license required.
