Job summary

Plain Dealing Lumber is seeking a Planer Mill Operator to safely run planer, trimmer, edger, and related equipment, monitor product quality, and maintain consistent production. You will follow run sheets, perform pre‑shift checks, and cooperate with teammates to meet safety, quality, and throughput goals.

This on‑site role requires attention to detail, the ability to work in a noisy, dusty environment, and willingness to rotate shifts and overtime.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED preferred; not required for candidates with verifiable planer mill or production manufacturing experience.
• Operator 1: No prior planer mill experience required; willing-to-learn attitude and commitment to safety required. Operator 2/3: Prior experience on planer mill equipment required.
• Ability to follow verbal and written instructions including run sheets, shift logs, and safety procedures.
• Ability to read basic lumber dimensional specifications.
• Strong attention to detail and ability to identify visual quality defects in planed lumber.
• Ability to work in a high-noise, high-dust planer mill environment.
• Demonstrated commitment to personal safety and coworkers' safety.
• Ability to work rotating shifts, scheduled overtime, and weekends.

Responsibilities

• Operate planer mill positions safely and according to procedures and supervisor directions.
• Feed and stage lumber to maintain a controlled, smooth production flow.
• Monitor lumber quality and flag non-conforming pieces immediately.
• Perform pre-shift equipment checks and report any abnormal conditions.
• Sort and stack finished lumber by grade, species, and dimension for downstream shipping.
• Maintain shift logs, report downtime and counts to Planer Supervisor.
• Follow all safety policies and LOTO procedures at every position.
• Keep work areas clean and organized, removing debris throughout the shift.
• Communicate with upstream/downstream operators to prevent bottlenecks and quality issues.
• Assist with minor tasks as directed; no mechanical repairs unless authorized.
