About the Role
Triad Control Systems is seeking an experienced Piping Designer to join our Plant Services team for an onsite assignment within an operating refinery. The Piping Designer will be embedded onsite with the client and responsible for performing piping design activities supporting capital projects, facility modifications, maintenance projects, and other brownfield project execution.

Responsibilities
- Familiarity with and utilization of client and department piping design and drafting standards.
- Recognizing and communicating project scope, specifications, client requirements, design criteria, and field constraints upon assignment to a project task team.
- Developing piping layouts, plans, sections, elevations, details, and other drawings required for construction.
- Developing and modifying piping designs based on P&IDs, equipment layouts, engineering sketches, specifications, vendor drawings, and field information.
- Performing field walkdowns and gathering accurate field dimensions and existing-condition information required to support brownfield project execution.
- Developing piping routing for new installations and modifications to existing process and utility piping systems.
- Identifying tie-in locations and developing piping modifications associated with brownfield projects, maintenance activities, outages, and turnarounds.
- Developing equipment arrangements and piping layouts considering accessibility, operability, maintainability, constructability, safety, and applicable design requirements.
- Preparing piping isometrics, piping plans, sections, details, tie-in drawings, and demolition drawings.
- Incorporating pipe supports, guides, anchors, equipment connections, valves, specialty items, and other piping components into designs.
- Coordinating piping designs with structural, civil, mechanical, electrical, instrumentation, process, and other engineering disciplines.
- Reviewing P&IDs and other engineering documentation for consistency with piping design requirements and identifying discrepancies or field conflicts.
- Reviewing vendor drawings and equipment documentation for dimensional and piping interface requirements.
- Producing material take-offs, Bills of Material (BOMs), and information required for construction work packages.
- Supporting constructability reviews and interdisciplinary design reviews.
- Reviewing and checking drawings and design documents prepared by other designers.
- Providing technical guidance to less experienced designers and drafters as required.
- Coordinating work activities with engineering, operations, maintenance, project management, construction personnel, vendors, and contractors.
- Supporting procurement, fabrication, construction, field installation, commissioning, startup, and troubleshooting activities.
- Responding to field questions and assisting with resolution of piping design and construction issues.
- Proactively coordinating design efforts to achieve project scope, schedule, budget, constructability, and quality objectives.
- Interfacing directly with client personnel regarding field conditions, technical matters, and project execution activities.
Experience and Skill Requirements
- Education: Associate Degree in Engineering Technology, Drafting Technology, Computer-Aided Drafting, or related technical discipline preferred.
- Experience: This position requires 5+ years of relevant industrial piping design experience.
- Experience in refining, petrochemical, chemical manufacturing, oil & gas, LNG, power generation, or similar industrial facilities is preferred.
- Brownfield and field design experience is required.
- Previous experience working within an operating refinery or process facility is strongly preferred.
- Proficiency with AutoCAD and applicable piping design/modeling software.
- Experience with AutoCAD Plant 3D, CADWorx, or similar 3D piping design software is preferred.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office software, including Word and Excel, is required.
- Ability to perform field walkdowns, take accurate measurements, verify existing conditions, and translate field information into accurate design documents.
- Ability to read and interpret P&IDs, piping specifications, equipment drawings, plot plans, piping plans, isometrics, and other engineering documentation.
- Knowledge of industrial piping systems, piping components, valves, fittings, flanges, specialty items, and piping support requirements.
- Familiarity with applicable piping codes and standards, including ASME B31.3, and client-specific piping specifications.
- Understanding of piping materials, specifications, line classes, and component selection.
- Knowledge of piping layout requirements including equipment access, maintenance clearances, valve accessibility, constructability, and safe operation.
- Familiarity with pumps, vessels, exchangers, tanks, compressors, and other common refinery/process equipment.
- Ability to identify and develop practical piping tie-ins and modifications within existing operating facilities.
- Ability to create accurate construction documents from engineering sketches, specifications, vendor documentation, P&IDs, and field information.
- Ability to estimate material quantities and support project and construction cost estimates.
- Knowledge and understanding of workflow and information flow between engineering disciplines.
- Ability to coordinate with other disciplines regarding design development and project execution.
- Ability to accurately estimate completion of assigned tasks.
