Job summary

Hargrove Engineers & Constructors in Tennessee is seeking an experienced Mechanical/Piping Designer with 4+ years of industrial experience. You will design moderately complex piping systems, create P&IDs and GA drawings, and mentor junior drafters under supervision.

Responsibilities include applying ASME B31.1/B31.3 standards, drafting to company CAD standards using MicroStation and E3D, and coordinating with discipline leads to ensure quality and on-time delivery.

Qualifications

  • Associate degree in Engineering Technology or CAD required.
  • 4+ years of relevant industrial experience in mechanical/piping drafting and design.
  • Familiarity with piping materials, supports, restraints, and ASME codes.

Responsibilities

  • Design complete mechanical/piping assignments under general supervision.
  • Draft P&ID's and GA's and develop installation documents.
  • Mentor less experienced drafters and provide guidance.
  • Coordinate work with staff and discipline leads to ensure quality.
  • Assist during startup on site.

Job description

What You\'ll Be Doing

Job Scope: Generally responsible for performing all aspects for complete designs of mechanical/piping assignments using theoretical knowledge and practical design methods. This level is expected to assist in the design of larger and more complex mechanical/piping assignments. This work will be performed under general supervision.

Primary responsibilities will include but not be limited to:
  • Familiarity with and utilizing department design and drafting standards.
  • On-site assistance during startup.
  • Providing technical guidance to less experienced drafting personnel in the department.
  • Coordinating work activities with other staff members and the discipline lead.
  • Complete understanding of the skills and experience required to perform design functions.
  • A working knowledge of piping fabrication and inspection methods.
  • Mentoring colleagues.
  • Participating in squad checks to insure coordination between the design disciplines.
  • Delegating work to designers in proportion to their technical skills and experience, then following up for support to ensure efficient progress and quality.

Ideal Background
Education

Associate degree in Engineering Technology or Computer-Aided Drafting is required.

Certification

Certification is not required at this level.

Experience

This position requires 4+ years of relevant industrial experience in mechanical/piping drafting and design.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge and application of piping materials.
  • Design of moderately complex process and utility piping systems, especially those systems unique to the industry being served.
  • Knowledge and application of piping supports and restraints.
  • Strong understanding of ASME B31.1 and B31.3.
  • Knowledge of manual valve sizing, use and application.
  • Knowledge of good design practices for sizing all piping systems.
  • Selecting piping specialty items given the design criteria.
  • Drafting of P&ID's and GA's.
  • Design of piping limited specific equipment and inline instrumentation arrangements such as pump suctions and discharges, tanks, control valve stations, etc.
  • Familiarity with specifications and installation details of construction bulk materials and equipment.
  • Ability to create accurate mechanical/piping installation documents from the information found on vendor equipment drawings.
  • Knowledge and understanding of work flow/information flow between disciplines.
  • Knowledge and understanding of schedule constraints and information requirements for the production of all mechanical/piping deliverables.
  • Ability to accurately estimate completion of assigned tasks.
  • Ability to develop mechanical/piping installation specifications with engineering review and approval.
  • Knowledge and application of company engineering design and CAD drafting standards.
  • Working knowledge of 2D, Microstation and 3D using E3D Software
  • - Proficient in the use of Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook.
  • - Good communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • - Virtual team skills and cross divisional relationships are developed and able to provide interoffice execution support with general supervision. Interoffice execution leadership is evident.
