Job summary

Hargrove Engineers + Constructors seeks a Mechanical/Piping Designer with 4+ years of industrial experience to contribute to complete piping designs and associated documents. You will support on-site startup, mentor junior drafters, and coordinate work with multiple disciplines to ensure quality and timely delivery.

The role requires familiarity with ASME B31.1/B31.3, piping materials, supports, and valve sizing, using 2D MicroStation and 3D E3D workflows.

Qualifications

  • Education requirement: Associate degree in Engineering Technology or CAD is required.
  • 4+ years of relevant industrial experience in mechanical/piping drafting and design.
  • Knowledge of piping materials, and design of moderately complex piping systems.
  • Understanding of piping supports, restraints, and valve sizing.
  • Familiarity with ASME B31.1 and B31.3 and P&ID/GA drafting.

Responsibilities

  • Perform complete designs of mechanical/piping assignments under supervision.
  • Assist in larger, more complex mechanical/piping designs.
  • Provide technical guidance to drafting personnel.
  • Coordinate work with staff and discipline lead to ensure quality.
  • Assist on-site during startup and with vendor drawings.

Job description

What You'll Be DoingJob Scope: Generally responsible for performing all aspects for complete designs of mechanical/piping assignments using theoretical knowledge and practical design methods. This level is expected to assist in the design of larger and more complex mechanical/piping assignments. This work will be performed under general supervision.Primary responsibilities will include but not be limited to:Familiarity with and utilizing department design and drafting standards.On-site assistance during startup.Providing technical guidance to less experienced drafting personnel in the department.Coordinating work activities with other staff members and the discipline lead.Complete understanding of the skills and experience required to perform design functions.A working knowledge of piping fabrication and inspection methods.Mentoring colleagues.Participating in squad checks to insure coordination between the design disciplines.Delegating work to designers in proportion to their technical skills and experience, then following up for support to ensure efficient progress and quality.Consulting with design leaders from other disciplines in proportion to their technical skills and experience, then following up for support to ensure efficient progress and quality.Ideal BackgroundEducation: Associate degree in Engineering Technology or Computer-Aided Drafting is required.Certification: Certification is not required at this level.Experience: This position requires 4+ years of relevant industrial experience in mechanical/piping drafting and design.Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:Knowledge and application of piping materials.Design of moderately complex process and utility piping systems, especially those systems unique to the industry being served.Knowledge and application of piping supports and restraints.Strong understanding of ASME B31.1 and B31.3.Knowledge of manual valve sizing, use and application.Knowledge of good design practices for sizing all piping systems.Selecting piping specialty items given the design criteria.Drafting of P&ID’s and GA’s.Design of piping limited specific equipment and inline instrumentation arrangements such as pump suctions and discharges, tanks, control valve stations, etc.Familiarity with specifications and installation details of construction bulk materials and equipment.Ability to create accurate mechanical/piping installation documents from the information found on vendor equipment drawings.Knowledge and understanding of work flow/information flow between disciplines.Knowledge and understanding of schedule constraints and information requirements for the production of all mechanical/piping deliverables.Ability to accurately estimate completion of assigned tasks.Ability to develop mechanical/piping installation specifications with engineering review and approval.Knowledge and application of company engineering design and CAD drafting standards.Working knowledge of 2D, Microstation and 3D using E3D Software• Proficient in the use of Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook.• Good communication skills, both verbal and written.• Virtual team skills and cross divisional relationships are developed and able to provide interoffice execution support with general supervision.
