Job summary

Metcon, Inc. is seeking a qualified Pipe Layer to support field operations in Pembroke, NC. You will measure, align, and lay piping systems, read blueprints, and coordinate with crew to ensure safe, efficient installation.

The role requires outdoor labor in varying weather, lifting heavy pipes, and operating trenching equipment. A valid driver's license and prior pipe-laying experience are essential for success.

Qualifications

Safety Management:

• In conjunction with Metcon Safety Director always monitors site safety compliance at all times.
• Participate on site safety meetings with Metcon Field Staff and applicable Subcontractors on a regular basis and as needed.

Physical Duties:

• Digging and Trenching
• Manual excavation: Pipelayers often use shovels and other hand tools to dig trenches where pipes will be laid. This requires considerable physical effort, especially in different soil conditions.
• Working with heavy equipment: They may assist with or guide the operation of excavators, trenchers, and backhoes.
• Handling and Installing Pipes
• Lifting and carrying pipes: Pipelayers handle large, heavy pipes made from materials like concrete, PVC, or metal. This involves lifting, moving, and positioning them into the trenches.
• Aligning pipes: They must align and position pipes correctly to ensure they fit together tightly.
• Sealing joints: Pipelayers connect pipes by sealing joints using adhesives, seals, or welding, which requires precise hand movements and physical effort.
• Backfilling and Compacting Trenches
• Filling trenches: After the pipes are installed, pipelayers is responsible for backfilling the trench, which involves shoveling and spreading dirt or gravel.
• Compacting soil: They may also use mechanical compactors to ensure that the backfill is firmly packed to prevent future settling.
• Operating Hand and Power Tools
• Pipelayers use a variety of tools such as pipe cutters, saws, and levels, as well as welding or soldering equipment. Operating these tools requires both precision and physical strength.
• Working in Confined Spaces
• Pipelayers often work in narrow trenches or deep holes, requiring them to bend, kneel, or squat for extended periods. This can be physically demanding, especially in tight or awkward positions.
• Enduring Various Weather Conditions
• Since much of the work is done outdoors, pipelayers are exposed to extreme weather conditions, including rain, heat, cold, and humidity, which adds to the physical strain.
• Maintaining Balance and Coordination
