Responsibilities
  • Laying pipes – Pipelayers lay pipes on and under the ground using a variety of tools and equipment.
  • Preparing trenches – Pipelayers dig trenches to the required depth, either by hand or with trenching tools. They may also grade or level the trench bases.
  • Positioning pipes – Pipelayers align and position pipes to prepare them for sealing or welding.
  • Sealing joints – Pipelayers use glue, cement, or welding equipment to connect pipe pieces and seal joints.
  • Covering pipes – Pipelayers cover pipes with dirt or other materials.
  • Maintaining pipes – Pipelayers perform continual maintenance on pipes and replace those that need repair.
