  • Interpret blueprints and construction documents to determine pipe layout.
  • Set up, calibrate, and operate lasers and leveling equipment for accurate trench grading and and alignment.
  • Excavate and prepare trenches while ensuring compliance with OSHA trench safety guidelines (e.g., proper shoring or trench boxes for depths over 5 feet).
  • Backfill and compact soil around installed pipes using hand tampers, rollers, or compactors.
  • Cut and fit pipe sections to required lengths and angles using saws, torches, or cutting tools.
  • Lead or coordinate with crew members on pipe installation tasks, ensuring quality and safety standards are met.
  • Handle and position heavy pipe segments using approved rigging methods.
  • Maintain awareness of surroundings to prevent struck-by and caught-between hazards.
  • Follow all site safety rules, including proper use of PPE (hard hats, gloves, steel-toed boots, hearing and eye protection, high-visibility clothing).
  • Ensure compliance with confined space entry protocols where applicable.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
  • Minimum two (2) years of experience in utility installation or pipe laying.
  • Knowledge of construction safety practices, with a working understanding of OSHA regulations (e.g., 29 CFR 1926 Subpart P for excavations).
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, site plans, and grade stakes.
  • Familiar with various pipe materials (PVC, ductile iron, concrete, HDPE) and appropriate installation techniques.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
  • Must have reliable transportation.
Physical Requirements:
  • Stand, walk, bend, and crouch for extended periods throughout an 8–10-hour workday.
  • Lift, carry, and move materials weighing 50–90 lbs. frequently; up to 150 lbs. with assistance.
  • Frequent climbing on ladders, equipment, scaffolding, and into trenches up to 15 feet deep.
  • Ability to work at heights up to 60 feet and in confined spaces following OSHA entry procedures.
  • Manual dexterity to operate hand tools, power tools, and compacting equipment.
  • Tolerance for repetitive movements including bending, reaching, lifting, and kneeling.
  • Must be able to wear appropriate PPE and remain alert in noisy, high-traffic environments.
  • Outdoor job sites in varying weather conditions (heat, cold, rain, snow).
  • Exposure to dirt, mud, water, dust, grease, and potentially hazardous materials (e.g., adhesives, fuels).
  • Regular proximity to heavy machinery, mobile equipment, and excavation operations.
  • Work may involve use of ladders, scaffold towers, and man-lifts per OSHA safety guidelines.
