Job summary

Cleary Construction is seeking experienced and motivated Pipe Layers to join our underground utility team in the Birmingham, Alabama area. The Pipe Layer is responsible for the safe and accurate installation of underground utility systems, including water, sewer, and storm pipelines.

This position works closely with Foremen, Equipment Operators, and Laborers to install pipe according to project plans, specifications, and grade requirements while maintaining Cleary's commitment to safety,

Qualifications

• Underground utility pipe installation experience preferred.
• Ability to read construction plans and grade stakes.
• Knowledge of trench safety and excavation practices.
• Experience with water, sewer, storm, or gas utilities.
• Valid driver’s license preferred.

Responsibilities

• Install water, sewer, and storm, gas pipe according to project plans and specifications.
• Prepare trenches for pipe installation, including proper bedding and backfill.
• Read and interpret grade stakes, utility drawings, and construction plans.
• Align, assemble, and connect pipe while maintaining proper line and grade.
• Assist equipment operators during excavation, pipe placement, and backfilling operations.
• Inspect pipe, fittings, and materials before installation.
• Maintain a safe, clean, and organized work area.
• Follow OSHA trench safety requirements and all company safety policies.
• Work effectively with crew members to complete projects safely and efficiently.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Position Summary

The Pipe Layer is responsible for the safe and accurate installation of underground utility systems, including water, sewer, and storm pipelines. This position works closely with Foremen, Equipment Operators, and Laborers to install pipe according to project plans, specifications, and grade requirements while maintaining Cleary's commitment to safety, quality, and productivity.

Primary Responsibilities

• Install water, sewer, and storm, gas pipe according to project plans and specifications.
• Prepare trenches for pipe installation, including proper bedding and backfill.
• Read and interpret grade stakes, utility drawings, and construction plans.
• Align, assemble, and connect pipe while maintaining proper line and grade.
• Assist equipment operators during excavation, pipe placement, and backfilling operations.
• Inspect pipe, fittings, and materials before installation.
• Maintain a safe, clean, and organized work area.
• Follow OSHA trench safety requirements and all company safety policies.
• Work effectively with crew members to complete projects safely and efficiently.

Qualifications

• Previous underground utility pipe installation experience preferred.
• Experience installing water, sewer, storm, or natural gas utilities.
• Ability to read construction plans and grade stakes.
• Knowledge of trench safety and excavation practices.
• Ability to safely use hand tools and construction equipment.
• Strong work ethic with the ability to work as part of a team.
• Valid driver's license preferred.

Preferred Experience

• Two or more years of underground utility construction experience.
• Experience working around excavators, loaders, and trenching equipment.
• Experience installing PVC, ductile iron, HDPE, or concrete pipe.
• OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification is a plus.
