Pipefitter Journey (Multi‑Skilled)

Job Summary
Under direction, the pipefitter performs work involved in the installation, maintenance, and repair of process facilities and systems, including high‑pressure steam pipes and fittings, pumps, boilers, furnaces, steam heating auxiliary equipment, and steam operated equipment. The pipefitter works with a variety of machine and hand tools and may prepare or work from sketches, plans, and specifications in accordance with accepted trade practices. The pipefitter may be called upon to perform routine welding, lead helpers, and undertake related work as required.
Responsibilities
- Interpret graphic symbols on piping drawings and plan and fabricate piping installations.
- Lay out, assemble, install, and maintain pipe systems, pipe supports, and hydraulic and pneumatic equipment for steam, hot water, heating, cooling, lubricating, sprinkling, and industrial production systems.
- Install and repair piping systems using flanged, screwed, bell and spigot, compression, and soldered joints.
- Perform lockout and tag procedures to secure and deactivate equipment and verify proper lockout procedures.
- Inspect work sites to determine presence of obstructions and ensure that holes cut for pipe will not cause structural weakness.
- Bend, cut, and thread pipe by hand or with powered equipment.
- Dismantle equipment or devices to remove defective parts or components.
- Enter safe vessels, towers, and columns for installation and maintenance of trays and cleaning.
- Perform miscellaneous tasks requiring manual movement of materials, tools, and equipment using hand and power tools.
- Maintain a clean work area and complete required documentation for repair and maintenance activities.
- Assign suitable tasks to helpers and work cooperatively with other crafts when necessary.
Requirements
- Four (4) years of experience involving layout, installation, and maintenance tasks.
- Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
Physical Requirements
- Manual and finger dexterity; eye‑hand coordination; depth perception.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to climb 30‑foot ladders without resting, maintain balance on catwalks and narrow workspaces, and stand for extended periods.
- Ability to reach above head while sitting or standing, below knees while standing, stoop or kneel.
- Capable of working 50 or more hours each week.
