The City of Valparaiso, Northwest Indiana, is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Pipe Mechanic Level 1 to perform installation, maintenance and repair on the distribution and collections infrastructure system.

The role reports to the VCU Field Services Director, requires a high school diploma or GED, the ability to obtain a Class B CDL within one year, and an 18+ age minimum. On-call rotation begins after one year, with comprehensive benefits and competitive pay.

• Completes daily work logs with hours and materials used.
• Follows safety procedures and participates in on-call rotation after one year.

The City of Valparaiso, located in Northwest Indiana just southeast of Chicago and minutes from the scenic Indiana Dunes National Park, is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Pipe Mechanic Level 1. The position reports to the VCU Field Services Director and is responsible for performing installation, maintenance, and repair activities on the distribution and collections infrastructure system. To perform this position successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function of the position satisfactorily. The requirements listed in this document are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

Qualifications Include

• High school diploma or GED; experience in maintenance work involving utility maintenance and general repairs are a plus.
• Ability to obtain and maintain a Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within one (1) year of date of hire.
• Must be at least 18 years of age.
• Ability to meet all employer and department hiring requirements, including passage of a drug test and essential function screening.

Position Expectations include

• Cleans debris off tops of intakes, removes piles of leaves and trash from curb lines, cleans brush from heavy storms, and pumps flooded areas into intakes.
• Installs, builds, and/or repairs manholes, intakes, sewer lines, storm lines, water lines, streets, sidewalks, and curbs, including locating areas needing repair and obtaining materials required.
• Operate equipment and machines to perform job functions including light equipment, mowers, pick-up trucks, one-ton trucks, hand and power tools, mechanic tools, concrete finishing tools, gas detection devices, and two-way radios.
• Performs preventive maintenance inspections and locates existing sewer collection and water distribution infrastructures for the “Call Before You Dig” service.
• Completes required daily work logs describing job assignments, hours and materials used.
• Must follow established safety procedures while completing work activities and operating assigned equipment.
• Serves oncall on a rotation basis after completion of one (1) year.
• Attends safety and training programs as scheduled.
• Performs related duties as assigned.

Compensation:

The City of Valparaiso provides a competitive salary structure. The salary for the Pipe Mechanic Level 1 is +/- $54,174 per year ($26.05 hourly) dependent on the candidate’s experience and qualifications.
