Job Overview
The utilities pipelayer is responsible for providing physical labor at construction project sites, operating a variety of hand and power tools, and supporting excavation and trenching operations.
Responsibilities
- Operate air hammers, earth tampers, cement mixers, small mechanical hoists, surveying and measuring equipment, and other tools.
- Clean and prepare sites, dig trenches, set braces to support excavation sides, and remove rubble, debris, and waste materials.
- Assist other craft workers as needed.
- Load and unload trucks and haul and hoist materials.
- Maintain a clean and safe job site, securing tools and equipment each day.
- Assist in identifying and ensuring underground and overhead utilities have been located/exposed prior to excavating.
- Review trenching requirements with the Superintendent and ensure required protection is available.
- Communicate with the project Foreman, Superintendent, General Superintendent, Safety Director, and management regarding concerns, actions, or hazards.
- Perform other projects or duties as assigned by management.
Requirements & Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Six to twelve months of construction experience, or equivalent education and experience.
- OSHA 10 certification, First Aid/CPR certification, and demonstrated knowledge of safety precautions.
- Experience reading and interpreting construction drawings (plans/blueprints).
- Ability to read and comprehend grade stakes and calculate grades.
- Experience setting up and utilizing a pipe laser.
- Experience using an eye‑level (transit).
- Knowledge of working with equipment, materials, and supplies on a construction site.
- Ability to follow proper use and safety guidelines at all times.
- Ability to view and understand the company’s safety training video.
- Willingness and ability to perform manual labor.
- Strong oral and written communication skills with coworkers, vendors, and business associates.
- Ability to understand, follow, and transmit written and oral instructions.
- Good interpersonal skills.
- Ability to apply mathematical concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions.
- Must pass a pre‑employment drug test.
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Union affiliation or willingness to join the union.
- Flexible to work 8–10 hour days, occasional weekends, and occasional travel.
Working Conditions & Physical Demands
- Require manual work and periods of extensive physical exertion.
- Exposure to adverse weather conditions (rain, snow, wind, cold, heat).
- Must lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
- Work may involve sitting, standing, walking, bending knees, stretching arms, stooping, kneeling, talking, and hearing.
