Job summary

Whitaker Construction, founded in 1953, is hiring pipelayers for heavy civil and underground utility projects in the Intermountain region. You will install and repair sanitary and storm sewer systems, measure and cut pipes per blueprints, and dig trenches with manual or powered tools.

Qualifications

• Minimum of 2 years’ experience in underground utility construction or equivalent
• Ability to operate lasers, tamping machines, saws and other hand or power tools safely
• Knowledge of street and highway traffic rules and safety precautions
• Ability to detect unsafe or hazardous conditions of equipment and work environment
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Ability to work effectively in a team environment
• Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation to commute

Responsibilities

• Install or repair sanitary or storm-water sewer structures or pipe systems
• Measure and cut pipes to required lengths per layout and blueprints
• Dig trenches to required depths by hand or with trenching tools
• Locate existing pipes needing repair or replacement with hand tools or heavy equipment
• Use lasers, grade rods and transit levels to set correct grade for pipe installation
• Cover pipes with earth or other materials as required
• Know construction stakes, grades, and Blue Stakes laws
• Align and position pipes for welding or sealing; connect pipe pieces and seal joints
• Check slopes for conformance using levels or lasers
• Lay out pipe routes following instructions or blueprints with supervisors
• Grade trench bases using tamping machines or hand tools
• Tap and drill holes into pipes for auxiliary lines
• Perform sewer manhole installations and proper joint setting
• Assist construction laborers with labor duties
• Other duties as assigned by supervisors
