Position Description

The Pipe Foreman will be responsible for supervising crews that install wet and dry utilities in a variety of settings including water lines, storm drain and sanitary sewer lines, and dry conduits. A pipe layer/operator will be assigned to a variety of jobs ranging from heavy highway, underground utilities, commercial site work, street improvements, waste water and water projects.

Pipe Layer / Operator foreman responsibilities and abilities include but are not limited to the list below. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Read, understand, interpret and enforce safety policies and practices.
  • Examine blueprints to determine dimensions of structure.
  • Lay out floor‑plan/worksite as needed.
  • Determine sequence of activities concerning fabrication, assembly, and erection of structure.
  • Assign workers to tasks.
  • Inspect work performed by subordinates to ensure conformance with specifications.
  • Study production schedules and estimate worker hour requirements for completion of job assignment.
  • Establish or adjust work procedures to meet production schedules.
  • Recommend measures to improve production methods, equipment performance, and quality of product to increase efficiency of work crew.
  • Analyze and resolve work problems, assist workers in solving work problems, and initiate or suggest plans to motivate workers to achieve work goals.
  • Maintain time and production records.
  • Estimate, requisition, and inspect materials.
  • Maintain a general knowledge of equipment used on the job, including basic understanding of equipment limits and designed purposes.

  • Minimum of 2‑3 years of supervising/crew leadership experience.
  • Minimum of 4‑6 years of experience in pipe laying.
  • Minimum of 4‑6 years of operating large heavy equipment experience in connection with pipe laying.
  • Work safely.
  • Be able to carry 70 lbs. or more – frequent cross body movements such as bending, climbing, twisting, balancing, stooping, etc.
  • Flexible availability to include overtime and weekends.
