Job summary

Software Engineering Institute | Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh seeks an AI-Native Software Engineering Researcher to advance AI-enabled software engineering across government, industry, and academia.

You will conduct research applying AI to large-scale software problems, publish findings in top venues, and mentor junior researchers while helping shape our AI-native software engineering strategy. Willingness to travel up to 25% is required; security clearance may be necessary.

Qualifications

• PhD required with at least two years of experience.
• Must be able to obtain and maintain a Department of War security clearance.
• Willing to travel up to 25% to locations outside of home base (SEI offices, sponsor sites, conferences).
• Proven track record of research and applying scientific methods to solve difficult problems.

Responsibilities

• Conduct research on applying AI to industry-scale software engineering problems.
• Disseminate results to engineering teams and the broader research community.
• Collaborate with government, industry, and academia to shape AI-native software engineering strategies.
• Pilot and transition improvements with organizations and measure their impact.
• Study cost implications and develop strategies for efficient AI use in development.
