Job summary

The YMCA of Greater New York is seeking a part-time Pickleball Instructor at the Park Slope Armory YMCA in Brooklyn, NY. You will work with children and teens to promote enjoyment of sports, develop physical skills, and build confidence, while delivering progressive lessons in a safe, inclusive environment.

Responsibilities include planning age-appropriate sessions, supervising participants, and communicating progress to families.

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of youth development stages.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with members of all ages.
  • Current First Aid or CPR certifications.
  • Must attend YMCA Coaching 101 Training within 90 days of employment.
  • Must receive the CDC HEADS UP Concussion in Youth Sports certificate within 30 days of employment.

Responsibilities

  • Develop program objectives and goals for each session with the Supervisor.
  • Create age-appropriate, progressive written lesson plans.
  • Supervise participants in line with YMCA standards (ratio, attendance).
  • Modify lesson plans to meet participant needs and abilities.
  • Encourage teamwork, sportsmanship, and safe play.
  • Teach rules, fundamentals, and skill development.
  • Communicate progress to parents/guardians and guide next session registration.
  • Promote additional YMCA opportunities to families.
  • Ensure equipment is safe, age-appropriate, and properly maintained, with monthly safety checks.
  • Lead program promotion and recruitment efforts in coordination with Supervisor.
  • Provide direction to volunteers or Sports Assistants when applicable.
  • Know branch emergency procedures and act accordingly in emergencies.
  • Maintain cleanliness of the program space during activities.
  • Inform the Manager on Duty about incident reports.
  • Participate in meetings, training sessions, and special events.

The Park Slope Armory YMCA is seeking a Pickleball Instructor who will be responsible for working with children/teens to promote the enjoyment of sports activities while improving physical competence, developing confidence, and teaching basic skill development. The overall major functions of the Pickleball Instructor also include:

  • Provide a fun, safe, and positive experience for all participants.
  • Demonstrate strong service and hospitality with all constituents, including, but not limited to, program participants and parents/guardians.
  • Create an all-inclusive and supportive learning environment.
  • Teach progressive lessons and provide opportunities to demonstrate learned skills.
  • Encourage a lifetime participation in sports and physical activity.
  • Embody the YMCA Core Values.
Key Responsibilities
  • Work with the Supervisor to develop program objectives and goals for each session.
  • Create a written lesson plan for the program session that is age-appropriate and progressive, as needed.
  • Provide supervision of the participants in line with YMCA program standards and guidelines (e.g., ratio, attendance, etc.).
  • Be able to modify lesson plans and instructions to meet the needs of the participants.
  • Emphasize teamwork and sportsmanship.
  • Teach rules and fundamentals and enhance basic skills.
  • Communicate with parents/guardians regarding the progress of their child/teen and registration for the next session.
  • Communicate with parents/guardians about additional YMCA opportunities that can benefit them or their child/teen.
  • Ensure that all equipment is age-appropriate, safe, and in proper working condition. This includes conducting monthly equipment safety checks.
  • Work with the Supervisor to develop and lead program promotion and recruitment efforts.
  • When applicable, provide direction to volunteers or Sports Assistants who support the program.
  • Have a thorough understanding of branch emergency procedures and take appropriate actions in emergencies.
  • Ensure the cleanliness of the program space during all activities.
  • Inform the Manager on Duty (MOD) regarding any incident reports that need to be filled out.
  • Actively participate in designated meetings, training sessions, and special events.
Desired Skills & Experience
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of experience teaching children/teens pickleball in a structured setting.
  • Knowledge of youth development stages.
  • Content expert in designated sports activity.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with members of all ages.
  • Current First Aid or CPR certifications.
  • Must attend the YMCA Coaching 101 Training within ninety (90) days of employment.
  • Must receive the CDC HEADS UP Concussion in Youth Sports certificate within thirty (30) days of employment.
