Job summary

St. Joseph Parish in Seattle is seeking a detailed-oriented Choral Piano Accompanist for the 9:00 AM and 11:00 AM Mass choirs. This part-time position offers about 8 hours per week and includes accompanying Masses and rehearsals, with music preparation in advance.

The ideal candidate has a degree in music or piano performance, strong sight-reading, liturgical music experience, and ability to collaborate with the parish music team. Occasional organ playing and weddings/funerals may be included.

Qualifications

• Degree in music or piano performance preferred.
• Experience providing piano accompaniment for churches is required; Catholic churches preferred.
• Sight reading proficiency and ability to accompany diverse liturgical music are essential.
• Ability to collaborate with the choir director and parish staff is important.

Responsibilities

• Collaborates with the Pastoral Leader and Directors to support parish mission.
• Accompanies 9:00 AM and 11:00 AM Masses and associated rehearsals.
• Accompanies Holy Days of Obligation and other liturgies as needed.
• Prepares music in advance using Gather Hymnal and other hymnals in collaboration with the Director of Music.
• Occasionally plays organ for special Masses and supports as back-up director when needed.
• Provides piano accompaniment for parish weddings and funerals when available.

Job Location: 0023 St. Joseph Parish, Seattle - Seattle, WA, Position Type: Part Time, Salary Range: $37.50 - $44.00Hourly

St. Joseph Parish is a vibrant Jesuit parish in Seattle, that strives to form parishioners in Ignatian Spirituality, especially building a community of faith that seeks justice. We are looking for a detailed-oriented, energetic, collaborative, and creative person to serve as Choral Piano Accompanist for our 9:00AM and 11:00AM Mass choirs. This is a part-time position of 8 scheduled hours per week.

ESSENTIAL POSITION DUTIES

• Collaborates with the Pastoral Leader, Director of Pastoral Ministries, and Director of Music in implementing the mission of the parish.
• Regular Masses and Rehearsals: Primarily accompanies 9:00AM and 11:00AM Masses at St. Joseph Church and associated rehearsals.
• Special Masses: Accompanies Holy Days of Obligation and other special liturgies and associated rehearsals (additional hours as needed).
• Parish Family Masses: Accompanies liturgies for parish family Masses and liturgies in collaboration with St. Therese Parish, including Easter Vigil; accompanies associated rehearsals (additional hours as needed).
• Preparation: Prepares music in advance of rehearsals and liturgies, including gathering music from the Gather Hymnal and other hymnals, giamusic.org, and ocp.org, in collaboration with the Director of Music.
• Organ: Plays organ occasionally for special Masses such as Easter, if have organ skills.
• Assists as a back-up to the choir director (currently the parish family Director of Music) to direct the choir when needed; accompanies the choirs and assists the substitute director (additional hours as needed).
• Provides piano accompaniment at parish weddings and funerals if available.
• Maintains a level of knowledge and skills required for the ministry. This is accomplished by reading appropriate materials and attending workshops.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Degree in music or piano performance higher preferred.
• Knowledge of Catholic liturgy preferred.
• Experience providing piano accompaniment for churches required, Catholic churches preferred.
• Demonstrated ability to sight read proficiently and accompany contemporary, traditional, multicultural, and classical music competently.
• Ability to play some brief improvisations preferred.
• Advance preparation and practice of all music is expected.
• Ability to collaborate well with others; as well as support the choir and choir director.

Any offered salary is determined based on internal equity, internal salary ranges, market data, applicant's skills and prior relevant experience, certain degrees and certifications.
