Job description

As a general surgeon and officer on the U.S. Army health care team, you'll be at the forefront of advanced surgical procedures, working in state-of-the-art medical facilities equipped with some of the most innovative technology in your specialty. You will lead a well-trained surgical team that examines, diagnoses, and evaluates surgical options and treatments for a diverse patient population. Unlike civilian practice, you won't face distractions such as office management, malpractice concerns, or overhead costs. If you choose the Army Reserve, you can continue working in your community and serve when needed. Regardless of your path, you will be part of a multidisciplinary team of dedicated professionals who share your values and passion for excellence.

Benefits include:
  1. Active Duty:
  2. Full-tuition scholarship for qualifying specialties, including a monthly stipend of over $2,200
  3. Up to $40,000 annually to repay qualifying loans through the Active Duty Health Professions Loan Repayment Program (ADHPLRP), with a maximum of three years. Active Duty Obligation is one year-for-year of loan repayment, with a minimum of two years on Active Duty
  4. $400,000 signing (accession) bonus, paid in four annual installments. The first payment is upon completion of Basic Officer Leadership Course (BOLC) and arrival at your first duty station; the remaining payments are on subsequent anniversaries
  5. Travel opportunities, including humanitarian missions
  6. 30 days of paid vacation annually
  7. A military retirement system combining a traditional pension with a Thrift Savings Plan contribution
  8. No-cost or low-cost medical and dental care for you and your family
  9. Grocery and post exchange shopping privileges (commissary and PX)
Army Reserve:
  1. $75,000 special pay, paid annually in $25,000 increments for up to three years, upon completing a residency
  2. Up to $250,000 for education loan repayment (up to $40,000 per year)
  3. Specialized training assistance and a monthly stipend during residency enrollment. Must be a U.S. citizen and serve in the Army Reserve for a designated period after residency completion
