Job description

JOB SUMMARY

The primary purpose of the SPEC, PHYS SVC CODING III, is to code physician charges in multiple specialties for both Emergency Medicine (EM) and Surgical encounters by assigning ICD-9, CPT-4, and HCPCS codes from medical record documentation. A SPEC, PHYS SVC CODING III must be knowledgeable about insurance and denial issues related to coding and capable of following complex compliance issues by utilizing appropriate coding and compliance resources. They present coding issues to others and support the team as needed, acting as a trainer and coach in specific situations.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Assign ICD-9, CPT-4, and HCPCS codes from documentation; apply appropriate modifiers.
  2. Problem-solve claim edits and support the denial process as requested.
  3. Uphold productivity standards and goals set by coding leaders and client contracts.
  4. Maintain a coding accuracy rate of 95.5%.
  5. Mentor and assist in training new employees.
  6. Effectively communicate coding and documentation issues to internal or external clients; deliver information in one-on-one or small group settings to peers.
  7. Meet deadlines and complete assignments before monthly closing dates.
  8. Demonstrate a good working knowledge of medical terminology, human anatomy, and coding.
  9. Possess knowledge of third-party reimbursement regulations and billing practices.
  10. Examine documents for accuracy and completeness.
  11. Understand and follow complex compliance issues by utilizing appropriate resources.
  12. Be detail-oriented with the ability to identify and resolve problems.
  13. Possess moderate knowledge of CCI edits and LCDs and apply regulation knowledge accurately in coding situations.
  14. Conduct oneself ethically, honestly, and professionally; demonstrate a willingness to learn and grow.
  15. Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel.
  16. Maintain strict confidentiality.
  17. Perform related work as required.

EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE
  • Associates Degree or vocational/technical education beyond high school.
  • Minimum of 5 years of coding experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in at least 2 specialties; 3 preferred.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
  • Required: AHIMA credentials and/or AAPC certification.
  • AAPC specialty certifications preferred.

Compensation ranges from $24.82 to $37.23 per hour, depending on location, qualifications, and experience.
