Northwestern University’s Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences seeks a full-time, tenure-track Investigator at the rank of Assistant Professor or Associate Professor, focusing on the clinical neuroscience of psychiatric disorders. The role involves building a major research program and mentoring a diverse trainee team, with a possible clinical commitment for clinician-scientists.
Located in downtown Chicago, the position offers substantial collaboration with Feinberg-affiliated
The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Northwestern University is seeking a full-time, tenure-track Investigator at the rank of Assistant Professor or Associate Professor, with expertise in the clinical neuroscience of psychiatric disorders. They will join a large, vibrant, multidisciplinary and highly collaborative community of neuroscientists and clinicians in a leading academic medical center located in the heart of downtown Chicago.
Northwestern Memorial Hospital (NMH) is an 894-bed academic medical center hospital that is the primary teaching affiliate for the Feinberg School of Medicine and has nearly 1,900 affiliated physicians representing virtually every medical specialty. Northwestern Memorial Hospital ranks among the top hospitals in the nation and is recognized for providing exemplary patient care and innovative advancements in a variety of clinical areas including cardiovascular care; oncology; neurology and neurosurgery; geriatrics; solid organ and soft tissue transplants; orthopedics; and women's health at its Prentice Women's Hospital.
We particularly encourage applicants using transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), deep brain stimulation (DBS), transcranial focused ultrasound, transcranial electrical stimulation, or related invasive and noninvasive neuromodulation approaches, alone or in combination with neuroimaging, human electrophysiology, or computational methods, to identify and modulate brain circuits underlying psychiatric and disorders. Strong consideration will also be given to clinician-scientists whose research program bridges mechanistic human studies and clinical trials of neuromodulation treatments, consistent with the National Institute of Mental Health's experimental therapeutics approach. Responsibilities include creating an internationally recognized research program in their specific research area, as well as mentoring students, fellows, residents, and other trainees. For clinician-scientists, a modest clinical commitment aligned with their research is anticipated, with the majority of effort protected for research. There are numerous opportunities for collaboration with researchers in the Department of Psychiatry and other Feinberg (e.g., Neurology; Neurological Surgery; Radiology; Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation) and Evanston campus (e.g., Biomedical Engineering; Department of Psychology) departments, as well as other Chicago-area institutions.
Qualified candidates will have productive research training at the postdoctoral, residency, or fellowship level, a collaborative research approach, a strong track record of impactful publications, and evidence of obtaining extramural funding (e.g., an NIH career development award such as a K23, K08, K01, or K99/R00; independent R-level funding; or an equivalent award). We are especially interested in clinician-scientists who are board certified or board eligible in psychiatry or a related clinical specialty and eligible for medical licensure in Illinois, and we are also open to candidates from other disciplines (e.g., cognitive neuroscience, biomedical engineering, clinical psychology) and graduate degrees whose research program centers on brain stimulation in humans. Competitive start-up package and laboratory space is offered.
The start date is negotiable and the position will remain open until filled.
The expected base pay range for this position is $170,000k - $180,000k.
