Summary

The James J. Peters VA Medical Center is seeking a Physician (Pulmonary & Critical Care) to be an integral part of the Specialty Care Service. The incumbent should possess leadership, energy, compassion, and a commitment to serve those who serve our Country.

Basic Requirements

• United States citizenship (non‑citizens only when no qualified citizens can be recruited).
• Doctor of medicine (MD) or equivalent degree in allopathic or osteopathic medicine from a VA‑approved school.
• Full, unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a U.S. state, territory, commonwealth, or the District of Columbia.
• Completed residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty leading to board‑certification eligibility.
• Approved residencies include ACGME or AOA accredited programs published for the year of completion; or one year of post‑medical‑school training followed by two years of independent practice; or non‑U.S. residency programs followed by a minimum of three years of verified independent practice in the U.S.
• Resident physicians currently enrolled in accredited programs are eligible to be appointed as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs) under specified conditions.
• Proficiency in spoken and written English.

Duties

• Provides comprehensive inpatient and outpatient specialty care within the James J Peters VA Medical Center.
• Provides inpatient ICU care in 12‑hour day/night shifts for medical, surgical, and cardiac patients in collaboration with resident teams and a critical care fellow.
• Performs and supervises critical care procedures including central line placement, endotracheal intubation, bronchoscopy (including EBUS), thoracentesis, and chest tube placement.
• Leads cardiac arrest and rapid response teams.
• Supervises and teaches residents and fellows, supporting the academic mission.
• Provides outpatient pulmonary care, including clinic management, bronchoscopies, and inpatient pulmonary consultations.
• Optionally participates in sleep medicine consultations and studies.
• Participates in clinical research, quality assurance activities, committee work, and special projects supporting patient care and organizational goals.

Key Qualifications and Skills

• Board Certified or Board Eligible in Pulmonary Disease and Critical Care Medicine.
• Active, unrestricted U.S. medical license (any state or territory).
• Proficiency in ICU procedures: central venous lines, intubation, bronchoscopy/EBUS, thoracentesis, and chest tube insertion.
• Experience managing medical, surgical, and cardiac ICU patients.
• Ability to lead emergency response teams (code blue, rapid response).
• Demonstrated skill in teaching and supervising residents and fellows.
• Experience in outpatient pulmonary care and consultative services.
• Participation in research, quality improvement, and interdisciplinary committee work.
• Strong communication, professionalism, and commitment to veteran‑centered care.
