Summary

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan repayment initiative. Applicants must meet specific eligibility criteria outlined by VHA policy and submit their EDRP application within four months of their appointment. The award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services after reviewing the application. Previous EDRP participants are ineligible to reapply.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet the basic requirements and any additional requirements specified in the job announcement. Those pending the completion of training or licensing requirements may be tentatively referred and selected but cannot be hired until all criteria are fulfilled. Existing VA-employed physicians who initially met the qualification standards are deemed to have met the current basic requirements.

Basic Requirements:

• U.S. Citizenship; non-citizens may be appointed only if qualified citizens cannot be recruited, per VA policy.
• Doctor of medicine or equivalent degree from an accredited institution approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs.
• Current, full, and unrestricted medical or surgical license in a U.S. state, territory, or the District of Columbia.
• Completed residency training approved by the VA, leading to eligibility for board certification. Residency must be accredited by ACGME, AOA, or deemed equivalent by the local Medical Staff Executive Committee.
• Residents enrolled in accredited residency programs are eligible for appointment as Physician Residents Providers (PRPs), who must be fully licensed and may only serve on an intermittent or fee basis.
• Proficiency in spoken and written English.
• Preferred experience in addiction psychiatry.
• Physical requirements as per VA Directive and Handbook 5019.

Duties

• The position is located at the Brooklyn VA Medical Center within the Mental Health Service, part of the VA New York Harbor Healthcare System, which includes multiple sites and CBOCs.
• Functions as a Unit Psychiatrist/Medical Director for a 20-bed addiction residential rehabilitation program.
• Provides comprehensive psychiatric care, including assessments, medication management, suicide risk evaluation, crisis intervention, and medication-assisted treatment for substance use disorders.
• Ensures practice compliance with TJC, CARF, HIPAA, VA policies, clinical guidelines, and legal standards.
• Participates in supervision, teaching, on-call duties, and team collaborations to enhance patient care.
