Hennepin Healthcare is an Equal Employment Opportunity employer: applicants from diverse backgrounds or historically under-resourced communities are especially encouraged to apply.
In this role, it is necessary to demonstrate sensitivity, knowledge and understanding of diverse academic, socioeconomic, gender, cultural and ethnic backgrounds.
Hennepin Healthcare seeks a full-time Psychiatrist to join our Inpatient Psychiatry Unit. The current inpatient team consists of psychiatrists and APPs who work in a team-based structure where each team is comprised of a psychiatrist, APP, social workers, and a nurse clinical care manager. Patients are divided among the team, with physicians seeing 10 patients and APPs seeing 8 patients on average. APP’s see patients independently with the expectation that physicians consult on challenging cases, sign off on discharge summaries, and participate in weekly multidisciplinary meetings. While some physicians choose to see everyone together, others do not. Providers are expected to be available via Telmediq from 8am – 6pm Monday through Friday for patient needs. Most admissions are admitted to inpatient from the psychiatric emergency department, Acute Psychiatric Services (APS), or are transferred from the medicine service once the Consult Liaison psychiatry team has deemed them appropriate. Length of stay depends on whether voluntary hospitalization or involuntary commitment, with a goal of 90 occupied beds.
The incoming physician will join this team of talented providers, helping to provide exceptional, compassionate, and personalized care to a diverse patient panel (adults only), with opportunities for precepting residents and students. S/he will work a similar schedule and cover six to eight 24-hour weekend/holiday call shifts per year. Whether on call Saturday or Sunday, physicians often have a scribe and are responsible for admissions, which are capped at seven per day. Physicians may leave after seeing patients, and are responsible for responding to pages via Telmediq until 8 am the following morning. An in-house team of medical APPs handles most issues in the unit (e.g., restraints and seclusions, medical needs, and PRN medication needs) and only contacts the physician on call when necessary. Physicians will, at times, be called for an urgent issue at the jail where there are mental health nurses who require more backup, or the very occasional clinic matter that may involve lost medication. As such, weekend coverage is characterized as benign and insignificant. The physician on call Sunday will also cover nights from home the following week Monday through Friday. S/he can expect very limited calls, if any, from the inpatient service or jail, and do not involve clinic patients.
Minimum Qualifications
• MD or equivalent foreign degree
• Completion of medical residency program in Psychiatry
• Board certified / Board Eligible in Psychiatry ( If board eligible, must be board certified within 4 years of training completion date)
• Current license to practice medicine in the State of Minnesota (or eligibility)
