Job description

Summary

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) - a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program approval, award amount (up to $200,000), and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending completion of training or licensing requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but cannot be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed VA physicians who met the requirements for appointment under the previous standards at their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements.

Basic Requirements:
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree from an accredited medical or osteopathic school.
  • The degree must have been obtained from a school approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course was completed.
  • Current, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in the US.
  • Residency Training: Completion of residency training approved by the VA in an accredited core specialty program leading to eligibility for board certification. VA academic faculty may require board certification.
  • Residents enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited programs are eligible for appointment as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs), who must be fully licensed and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee basis. PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
  • Additional Requirement: Board Certified or Board Eligible Psychiatrist. More info at VA Qualification Standards.
  • Physical Requirements: Visual acuity (corrected), keen hearing (aids permitted), manual dexterity, and ability to perform prolonged walking, standing, sitting, bending, and lifting (under 15 pounds). Exposure to noise, irregular hours, and potential patient aggression. Must be flexible, mature, and capable of working effectively under stress. CPR certification per BLS protocols.
Duties
  • This is an open continuous announcement until August 13, 2025, with initial referral cut-off on June 18, 2025, and subsequent cut-offs every 5 days. Applications received after will be considered as vacancies arise.
