Overview

This position is located at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in the Department of Patient Administration, Medical Boards. The role is in an office setting, 8 hours per day.

Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC), formerly known as the National Naval Medical Center and colloquially referred to as Bethesda Naval Hospital, Walter Reed, or Navy Med, is a prominent U.S. military medical center located in Bethesda, Maryland. Since its opening in 1940, it has provided medical care for several U.S. presidents.

In 2011, the Walter Reed Army Medical Center (WRAMC) was merged with the National Naval Medical Center to form the tri-service Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.

Responsibilities

Description:

  • Serve as Physician Psychiatrist for the Medical Evaluation Board.
  • Review medical records to assess behavioral health or TBI-related conditions against Department of Defense and Service-specific retention standards.
  • Create permanent profiles for Service Members to be included in packets forwarded to the Physical Evaluation Board to determine fitness for duty.
  • Conduct impartial reviews and appeals during the Medical Evaluation Board stage of the Integrated Disability Evaluation System (IDES).
  • Collaborate with other health professionals to ensure comprehensive medical reviews.
  • Serve as a consultant to other physicians on complex psychiatric cases referred to the Board.
  • Work with administrative staff to ensure timely and accurate Medical Board Reports.
  • Develop behavioral health Narrative Summaries and other Medical Evaluation Board documents.
  • Educate and advise Service members regarding Impartial Provider Review findings and IDES next steps.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

To qualify, you must meet the education and experience requirements below. Experience includes paid, unpaid, volunteer work, and service through programs like Peace Corps or AmeriCorps. Your resume must clearly detail relevant experience; transcripts are required if qualifying through education.

Basic Requirement for Physician (Psychiatry):

  • Degree: MD, DO, or equivalent from an accredited U.S. or Canadian medical school recognized by relevant accrediting bodies.
  • Foreign degrees must demonstrate equivalency, evidenced by certification from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates or similar.

Licensure: Must possess a current, unrestricted medical license from a U.S. state, District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, or U.S. territory.

Graduate Training: At least one year of supervised clinical experience post-degree, such as an internship or first year of residency.

Additional qualification includes successful completion of an accredited residency in Psychiatry (minimum 4 years). Board certification in Psychiatry is preferred but not required.
